Women in Vietnam www.WomenInVietnam.com "The military, which prided itself on the records it kept in Vietnam -- counting the enemy number of weapons captured, for example -- cannot to this day say with certainty how many women served. The army that sent them never bothered to count them. The estimate most frequently given is that a total of 7,500 served in the military in Vietnam." Laura Palmer, " Shrapnel in the Heart " What We Need to Remember . . . " Women are warriors the same as men are warriors, and what this country owes them, if 'owe' is the word, is the same as we give any warrior. And that every time we sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" ... and we really get off on ' the rockets red glare, bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag is Read More

American Women in Uniform, Veterans Too!

Welcome to the home of the skeptical, irascible, doubting, iconoclastic Captain Critical, aka Captain Barb, whose pontificating will try to amuse, bemuse, irritate and generally annoy anyone bold enough to stay long enough to read the ramblings of a self appointed distaff critic who will continue to remind you that women are veterans too! Did you know that there are almost two million women veterans? From the American Revolution to Panama, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq , women have served in some way in every conflict. Not that they were legal in the early days. History tells us that thirty three thousand women served in World War One and almost 500,000 took part in World War Two. During the Korean era 120,000 women were in uniform and seven thousand were deployed in theater during Read More

--> But at that point, I looked up and I saw five Iraqi guys with their, you know, rifles pointed at me. So then I knew I wasn't dead. And I knew I was captured. Then one of them reached down, grabbed me by the arm, and stood me up. And that's when he separated my already broken right arm. And then I knew I was pretty badly hurt and clearly, clearly not dead. Were you aware, could you see the others? Could not see. It was very dark by this time. Now it had been, it'd been cloudy and smoky when we went in, at I think it was like 4.15 in the afternoon. And I don't know what time it was when they captured us, but I would guess, probably... It was dark, completely, you know, night time, so it was a couple of hours later. Did you assume you were the only one that'd...? At that time I assumed I Read More

Molly Pitcher

The Story of Molly Pitcher An Artillery wife, Mary Hays McCauly (better known as Molly Pitcher) shared the rigors of Valley Forge with her husband, William Hays. Her actions during the battle of Monmouth on June 28, 1778 became legendary. That day at Monmouth was as hot as Valley Forge was cold. Someone had to cool the hot guns and bathe parched throats with water. Across that bullet-swept ground, a striped skirt fluttered. Mary Hays McCauly was earning her nickname "Molly Pitcher" by bringing pitcher after pitcher of cool spring water to the exhausted and thirsty men. She also tended to the wounded and once, heaving a crippled Continental soldier up on her strong young back, carried him out of reach of hard-charging Britishers. On her next trip with water, she found her artiller Read More

This page is not sponsored by, or associated with any organization, but on behalf of descendants of Benjamin & Nancy Hart and myself, we also dedicate this page to the many people, past and present, (i.e. NSDAR , NSSAR ) who have worked hard to preserve and perpetuate their memory. Painting of Nancy Morgan Hart by Louis S. Glanzman. National Geographic, October 1975. THE WOMEN'S ARMY CORPS: A COMMEMORATION OF WORLD WAR II SERVICE By Judith A. Bellafaire CMH Publication 72-15 Introduction World War II was the largest and most violent armed conflict in the history of mankind. However, the half century that now separates us from that conflict has exacted its toll on our collective knowledge. While World War II continues to absorb the interest of military scholars and historians, as well as its veterans, a generation of Americans has grown to maturity largely unaware of the political, social, and military implications of a war that, more than any other, united us as a people with a common purpose. Highly relevant today, World War II has much to teach us, not only about the profession of arms, but also about military preparedness, global strategy, and combi Read More

Women in World War One

WWI Thirty Thousand Women Were There In 1901 and 1908 the establishment of the Army and Navy NurseCorps opened the door for women in the military but ever so slightly. Itwasn't until the United States got involved in World War One that some partsof the government got serious about using woman power. As the Army stumbled around bureaucratic red tape trying to figure outhow to enlist women the Navy simply ignored the War Department dissentersand quickly recruited women. Nearly 13,000 women enlisted in the Navy andthe Marine Corps on the same status as men and wore a uniform blouse withinsignia. The Navy's policy was extended to the Coast Guard, but personnel records from World War I contain scarcely anyreferences to the Coast Guard Yeomanettes. A handful of them apparently were emplo Read More
