No. 1245: SARAH BAGLEY by John H. Lienhard Click here for audio of Episode 1245. Today, a woman claims a job market for other women. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. M adeleine Stern tells about Sarah Bagley, who went to Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1836, to work in the new spinning mills and in the Hamilton watch factory. Lowell was just hitting its full stride as a model industrial city. Distinguished Women of Past and Present "But history, real solemn history, I cannot be interested in... I read it a little as a duty, but it tells me nothing that does not either vex or weary me. The quarrels of popes and kings, with wars or pestilences, in every page; the men all so good for nothing, and hardly any women at all -- it is very tiresome" -- Catherine Morland in Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey (1817) Search by Subject (Chronological before 20th century) Search by Name Black History Month Search the Net Books about Women Why I created this site We're currently updating the site.
