All you want to know about SGML ( 8-May-1996)

All you want to know about SGML The Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) is this thing, you see. Actually, it is a metalanguage for writing other languages, in this case, markup languages for documents. It is based on the theory that any document can be split into three parts Data Structure Format The data is the actual knowledge being passed on. The format is the final presentation. The structure is the part that concerns SGML. SGML is a language to specify the structure of a document. This structure is called a Document Type Definition (DTD). It is somewhat reminiscent of BNF notation. The advantage of SGML is that it gives you a better handle on the the contents of your documents. Once you've got this, the possibilities are endless. In fact, stop thinking of an SGML "document" as Read More

ANZMETA XML Document Type Definition (DTD) for geospatial metadata in Australasia ANZLIC Metadata Guidelines: Core metadata elements for geographic data in Australia and New Zealand, Version 2 (February 2001) ANZLIC released Version 2 of the guidelines following a minor review to address some inconsistencies and deficiencies present in the former version. A further revision of the Guidelines will be undertaken once an ANZLIC profile of the International metadata standard, ISO 19115 Geographic Information - Metadata, is developed. To ensure that all dataset descriptions are of a consistent type, the Document Type Definition (DTD) defines the metadata elements and their order, structure, rules, and relationships. A DTD allows different instances of documents of the same type to be automatica Read More

JEP: SGML and PDF

SGML and PDF--Why We Need Both by BILL KASDORF Book and journal publishers need to approach the two key technologies used in making print and electronic products -- SGML, the Standard Generalized Markup Language, and PDF, Adobe Acrobat's Portable Document Format -- with an open mind. Each of those technologies is very powerful in its own way; but ultimately, many publishers will use both in order to achieve the most streamlined workflow and make the best use of their intellectual property. Introduction One of the most common misconceptions among publishers expanding from print into electronic publishing is that they must choose between two competing technologies -- SGML, the Standard Generalized Markup Language (or one of its close relatives, HTML and XML), and PDF, Adobe Acrobat's Portabl Read More
