The need for Lighthouses along the shores of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay became critical with the opening of the Queen's Bush on the Bruce Peninsula. Settlers needed access to the land which was densely wooded. Water travel and commerce were key to the life of the area. Aware of the dangerous waters along the coast, it was acknowledged that they must be lit to protect the settlers and mariners that plied the waters. Therefore, in 1855 the Department of Public Works commissioned the building of a series of Lighthouses along the Huron coast and into Georgian Bay.
