Modern beacons rule the coasts, but lighthouses keep hold of the heart April 19, 1997 (CNN) -- Lighthouses have been called the most altruistic structures ever built. After almost 300 years of guiding ships along the U.S. coasts and Great Lakes, their usefulness is waning. But they have never lost their power to ignite poetry in those who visit them. "Lighthouses are to America what castles are to Europe. They're among the oldest standing structures in (the U.S.)," says Tim Harrison, editor of the Maine-based "Lighthouse Digest." When the United States became a country, 12 lighthouses kept vigil over settled shores, according to Wayne Wheeler, founder of the U.S. Lighthouse Society. Over the years, he says more than 2,000 light stations were built. Today, the National Park Service estimate Read More

Legendary Lighthouses

--> Legendary Lighthouses is partially underwritten by a grant from Lighthouse Depot . The earliest lighthouses were simply bonfires built on hillsides to guide ships. The first light served the old world city of Alexandria in 285 B.C. The first American light came to life in 1716 at Boston Harbor. This site explores the history, legends, lore and workings of lighthouses along American shorelines. Discover how a special lens, called a "Fresnel" (pronounced: Fruh-nell) increases the power of a light and focuses it in one direction. Read fascinating stories about individual lighthouses and how a 729 foot-long ship known as the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in just ten seconds. View the dozens of pictures of lighthouses and the beautiful places where they stand and serve as symbols of an e Read More

Lighthouses

Lighthouses For thousands of years, lighthouses have been the beacons for those who traveled by water. Ships sailing on oceans, lakes and rivers needed guidance to find their way around dangerous rocks, sandbars, and ports. The first beacons were bonfires on hills, thus the next step was to raise the beacons up. The oldest lighthouses were simple structures topped with bonfires. These were built as early as the 7th century B.C. along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Early U.S. Lighthouse Service keepers were required to "keep the light burning" from sunset until sunrise during the shipping season, April through November, the keepers were paid a total of $520 per year for 365 days of service. Lighthouses have fascinated me ever since I saw my first one, Assateague Light, Virginia. I hope Read More

I will maintain the Geocities site for a couple of months. In the meantime, why don't you visit me at the new location. Newfoundland has had lighthouses since 1813, when the first was built and operated by voluntary contribution at Fort Amherst at the mouth of St. John's Harbour. A lighthouse still stands on that location, the third structure to exist there. Other lighthouses were built after formation of the Lighthouse Board by the Commission Goverment in 1832. Most of those, or their replacement structures still stand today. I do not have an official listing of lighthouses in Newfoundland, but I have compi Read More

? ? ? The goal of this web site is to encourage others to seek out these?? beautiful and historic endangered "Aids to Navigation". In 1995, we visted St. Augustine Light and became aware of the plight of our American Lighthouses (another one of our endangered species). We decided to visit as many of the lights as we could in our future travels. We had planned to tour the United States and visit friends and relatives thoughout the states. We always wanted to check out the Lighthouses of the states so we added Lighthouses to our itinerary. While in the northeastern part of the country we visited lighthouses in New Jersey. One was at the southern tip called Cape May Light , the other was Barnegat Light located in the middle on Long Beach Island. ? ? ? ? ??? On the way back to Florida we saw H Read More
