Quarterdeck 3.1 Recent Graduate Seismic stratigraphy and salt tectonics of the Alaminos Canyon area, Gulf of Mexico by Suzanne M. Hewitt [43K] Map of study area The goal of my research was to study salt distribution and the interrelationship between the movement of salt, development of slope basins, and sediment distribution within the Alaminos Canyon area, Gulf of Mexico. The Alaminos Canyon area is a region of complex seafloor topography located at the transition between the continental slope and rise. By studying this area, we can gain a better understanding of the geologic processes within the slope environment and provide information for future exploration. Due to the depth of the seafloor within the study area, direct sampling of sediment and rock is difficult. The results of this st Read More

COMBINED EXTENSIONAL-DETACHMENT AND SALT TECTONICS FORM AN ATYPICAL EXTENSIONAL BASIN, SEVIER VALLEY, UTAH

Paper No. 161-0 COMBINED EXTENSIONAL-DETACHMENT AND SALT TECTONICS FORM AN ATYPICAL EXTENSIONAL BASIN, SEVIER VALLEY, UTAH CLINE, Eric J. and BARTLEY, John M., Geology and Geophysics, Univ of Utah, 135 South 1460 East #719, Salt Lake City, UT 84112-0111, ecline@mines.utah.edu The geologic structure of Sevier Valley in central Utah is atypical of extensional basins. Bounding ranges on the east and west are underlain by Tertiary strata and Jurassic rocks underlie low hills on the eastern side of the valley. The map pattern thus suggests that the valley is a horst rather than a graben! We interpret the valley to have formed along a normal fault but with an unconventional geometry owing to effects of weak and buoyant evaporitic mudstone in the footwall block. In eastern Sevier Valley, steeply Read More
