ACTIVE TECTONICS IN THE PAMIRS

Votes:0
ACTIVE TECTONICS IN THE PAMIRS This page is under construction. It is dedicated to the investigation of active tectonics in the Pamirs. Summary This project will develop a research program on active earthquake deformation of the northern foothills of the Pamir Mountains, Kyrgyzstan with European colleagues to address basic problems in the formation of large mountain belts and applied problems in the mitigation of earthquake hazards. Problems Along leading edge of the Pamir Mountains is a fault system that accommodates some of the deformation associated with the collision of India with Eurasia. Because of the arid environment, lack of human degradation of the landscape, spectacular exposures of the effects of recent earthquakes and of the uplift of the mountain, this area is a premier natur Read More

ABAG Earthquake Shaking Hazard Maps ABAG Earthquake Shaking Hazard Maps Directions for viewing an earthquake shaking hazard map - Earthquakes in the Bay Area are caused by rupturing of a fault or fault segment. Thus, to view an earthquake intensity map of your area, you need to both select an area (city) and select a fault as the source of the earthquake. Note: only maps of the region, not individual cities, are available for the two thrust faults at this time. STEP 1 - Choose a city from the first window. STEP 2 - Choose a fault source for the earthquake scenario using the map by clicking on a colored fault segment on the map or on the button next to the fault name. You should find that the most interesting scenarios are the ones involving multiple fault segments on the San Andreas and Ha Read More

EARTHFORCE in the crust

EARTHFORCE i n t h e c r u s t Go outside, find a flat piece of ground, and stand perfectly still. You won't be able to notice it, but the ground beneath your feet is moving. Imagine that you are balancing on a raft on a pond, gently drifting. If you live on the North American continent, the ground beneath you is one giant raft drifting westward very slowly, about 2.5 centimeters (one inch) per year. Get a ruler and think about that. Imagine that you move just one inch during an entire year. That seems pretty slow, but, considering the size of the continent, the force of that movement can be huge. If a bicycle moved an inch and bumped into you, it wouldn't really hurt. If a car moved an inch and bumped into you, it might make a bruise. If a school bus moved an inch, the bump might break a Read More

Earthquake Intensity

Votes:0
The Modified Mercalli Scale of Earthquake Intensity In seismology a scale of seismic intensity is a way of measuring or rating the effects of an earthquake at different sites. The Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale is commonly used in the United States by seismologists seeking information on the severity of earthquake effects. Intensity ratings are expressed as Roman numerals between I at the low end and XII at the high end. The Intensity Scale differs from the Richter Magnitude Scale in that the effects of any one earthquake vary greatly from place to place, so there may be many Intensity values (e.g.: IV , VII ) measured from one earthquake. Each earthquake, on the other hand, should have just one Magnitude , although the several methods of estimating it will yield slightly different valu Read More

FEMA For Kids: Earthquakes: Fact and Fiction

Earthquakes: Facts and Fiction Fiction: Earthquakes usually happen in the morning. Fact: Earthquakes happen in both the day and the night. There is no pattern. Fiction: There is such a thing as "earthquake weather." Fact: There is no connection between earthquakes and weather. Remember, earthquakes happen deep in the earth, far away from the weather! Fiction: Earthquakes are on the increase. Fact: It may seem like we?re having more earthquakes because there are more reporting stations, but the truth is we?re not. Fiction: We can prevent earthquakes from happening. Fact: No. You can protect yourself by doing things to secure buildings, like your home, but earthquakes can?t be prevented -- or predicted. Geophysics: Earthquakes

Why do some places have earthquakes, and other places don't? Are some regions prone to quakes while others immune? When will the next big one hit? Are we prone to earthquakes in Illinois? Seismologists, the scientists who study earthquakes, have developed a global network of seismograph stations which continually monitor for quakes, even small ones which cannot be felt. The data which they collect are recorded and processed on computers at key research centers throughout the world. Some of these research centers make their data available over the internet for other researchers to use in their work. We will be taking advantage of their generosity by retreiving recent and historical earthquake information directly from their computers in order to help us understand their causes. Savage Earth: Waves of Destruction

Votes:0
--> A Deadly Force by Daniel Pendick Though it's true that tsunamis are ocean waves, calling them by the same name as the ordinary wind-driven variety is a bit like referring to firecrackers and atomic warheads both as "explosives." Triggered by volcanic eruptions, landslides, earthquakes, and even impacts by asteroids or comets, a tsunami represents a vast volume of seawater in motion -- the source of its destructive power. The Japanese characters for tsunami mean "harbor wave," and many people commonly refer to them as tidal waves, but in reality tsunamis have little to do with tides. They are creatures of the open ocean, trains of giant waves that can travel for thousands of miles across the sea and still pack enough energy to smash towns and drown the unwary. A tsun Read More

Seismic Waves

Seismic Deformation When an earthquake fault ruptures, it causes two types of deformation: static ; and dynamic . Static deformation is the permanent displacement of the ground due to the event. The earthquake cycle progresses from a fault that is not under stress, to a stressed fault as the plate tectonic motions driving the fault slowly proceed, to rupture during an earthquake and a newly-relaxed but deformed state. Typically, someone will build a straight reference line such as a road, railroad, pole line, or fence line across the fault while it is in the pre-rupture stressed state. After the earthquake, the formerly stright line is distorted into a shape having increasing displacement near the fault, a process known as elastic rebound . Seismic Waves The second type of deformation, dyn Read More

Exciting photos from La Manzanilla A sequence of a tsunami coming ashore! Description of the Event: On Monday, October 9, 1995, an earthquake of Mw 8.0 occurred offshore of the states of Jalisco and Colima, along the Pacific coast of central Mexico. Extensive shaking damage occurred in Manzanillo, resulting in approximately 40 deaths and about 100 injured. The earthquake set off a moderate tsunami that impacted about 200 km of coastline. Tsunami runup ranged from 1 - 5 m, from Paraiso in the south to Tenacatita Bay in the north, where the most severe flooding was recorded. Severe damage also occurred in the Port of Manzanillo, where a 12-knot tsunami induced current caused extreme erosion on the banks of the port. The San Andreas Fault and the San Francisco Bay Area This image shows San Andreas Lake and Crystal Springs reservoir from the air, looking SouthEast from HERE. The highway paralleling the lakes to the left is Interstate 280, ``the most beautiful urban highway in the United States''. (And it is indeed very scenic.) This valley is remarkably straight because the San Andreas fault runs down its center. The San Andreas is a classic ``Strike Slip'' fault: the two sides (for the most part) move past each other horizontally. (San Francisco Bay is there at least partly because the block between the San Andreas on the West and the Hayward fault on the East has been downdropped a bit, but that motion is small compared to the tremendous horizontal displacements that have occurred along these faults.)
