Biomes in Multimedia Overview: Fifth graders do a unit study on biomes for science class. After spending two weeks studying vocabulary and general information about each biome, students were divided into groups of four to study more detailed information about each biome. They researched information about their particular biome using books from the library, reference books, and the internet. Students then put together a slide presentation about their biome using SuperLink on the computer with pictures, captions, audio, and music. The finished project is then recorded on a VCR. Cookie Cutters - Class Web Site Thematic Unit Overview: This was a kid created web site that covered the TEKS for Language Arts, Technology, Science, Social Studies, and Math. We wanted the kids to experience the wonders of the Internet, to gain knowledge of computer terms, to learn how to safely travel along the Internet. We wanted to build their critical thinking skills, writing skills, and communication skills as they wrote the text that goes into our site. In order to participate, the kids had to express an interest in the project, they had to follow specific behavior guidelines set up in the classroom management system, they had to follow the "cybersafety" guidelines and be willing to work hard each time we met. Each student had a job assignment to complete that we rotated o Read More

HyperStudy-O

HyperStudy-O Overview: The stack starts with one main card which has categories and buttons with point values. It can be played similar to Jeopardy!, making the higher point items the more difficult questions. The main difference is that questions are given, and the student must provide the answers aloud or written. Once a button is press on the main card, it will go to a card where the question is displayed. Press a button there to see what the correct answer is. Then press the button to go back to the main card to pick a new question. Since questions are not disabled after choosing it, if a question is missed, it could be asked again. Although this was done in HyperStudio 3.1 for Macintosh, it could easily be done on IBM compatible computers with HyperStudio or in HyperCard. The stack it Read More

Immigration

Immigration Overview Immigration is a topic that affords tremendous opportunities to be explored by every discipline in education. In many ways, it can be said that immigration is the tap root of America. Its selection as a topic for an interdisciplinary unit was not haphazard, but the result of an identified need to introduce a learning environment that addressed the depth and richness of the American experience as a single, unified subject. The timing of this unit was also important. When introduced in November, the "Columbus" factor plays a significant role in developing a foundation of understanding as students explore the facts of the collision of two old cultures and the consequences. Time Frame This unit requires six to eight weeks. Content areas had the flexibility to pro Read More

Medieval Times

Medieval Times Overview: Although this project could easily be applied to the study of the State of Texas, our 4th grade students did this while studying Medieval times. Students were assigned a specific topic for individual study such as Village Life, Monks & Nuns, Castles, Clothing or Education and were expected to research their topic using at least four sources - only one of which was allowed to be an encyclopedia. Once their research was complete, they made storyboards for their six card Hyper Studio project. They were encouraged to use as much detail as possible in their storyboards so that when they had time at the computers they knew exactly what they needed to do. Deciding ahead of time where text buttons and pictures should go made the project much easier to assemble. Students we Read More
