Welcome to Online From Jupiter 97 This project was active from mid-February, 1997 through April 6, 1997 The Galileo mission is designed to help scientists learn much more about the planet Jupiter and its moons. NASA's Galileo spacecraft arrived at Jupiter on December 7th, 1995. Upon arrival, Galileo's probe plunged into Jupiter's atmosphere. The probe sucked up lots of data about the structure and composition of Jupiter; this info was relayed (via the mothership) back to us on Earth. Preliminary details about this data were shared at a press conference in January. With the Probe's job done, the Galileo mothership (formally called the Orbiter) will continue to orbit Jupiter, studying the giant planet and its moons for two years. The following NASA women have volunteered to participate in the Women of NASA project. This is certainly not a complete list of NASA women, and any participation is on a voluntary basis. We thank them for sharing their time and wisdom with the many young people who participate in our project. Together we are making a difference in what young women see as their opportunities, career paths and dreams. You will notice that the listing of women is categorized under areas of work or education. Many women are listed multiple times as their careers have progressed or span various areas. A Bit about Galileo

Votes:0
[ Main | News | Countdown | Search | FAQ | Glossary ] A Bit about Galileo Galileo is a NASA spacecraft mission to Jupiter, launched in 1989 and currently in the middle of its two-year study of the planet's atmosphere, satellites and surrounding magnetosphere. It was named for the Italian Renaissance scientist who discovered Jupiter's major moons in 1610 with the first astronomical telescope. This mission became the first to make direct measurements from an instrumented probe within Jupiter's atmosphere and is the first to conduct long-term observations of the planet and its magnetosphere and satellites from orbit around Jupiter. It was also the first to encounter an asteroid and to photograph an asteroid's moon. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory designed and developed the Galileo Jupiter orbit Read More

An Inquirer's Guide To The Universe

Votes:0
The universe is expanding. Maybe. Our understanding of the universe is expanding. Definitely. Practically every month, new theories about the origin and age of the universe are being announced. In just the past year, scientists have identified three new planets. Inhabitants of planet Earth have begun to wonder if the newly discovered planets may have their own inhabitants. Might the new planets support life? For the time being, we can only imagine. How To Use The Guide An "inquirer" can begin by thinking about and investigating what we already know about planets and the universe. Use the list of "Space Science Fact" resources to help you inquire. Then, consider some of the "Space Science Fiction" resources. When you're ready, visit the "Imaginary Planet Gallery." Earth/matriX Science in Ancient Artwork PAKAL, THE MAYA ASTRONAUT: A STUDY OF ANCIENT SPACE TRAVEL by Charles William Johnson " Pakal, The Ancient Astronaut: Paleoanimation of the Sculpture of the Maya at Palenque " Introduction In the Earth/matriX Series of essays, we have been attempting to discern the manner in which the ancient astronomers/priests seem to have translate astronomical data into mathematical models for the reckoning of time. These mathematical models and the numerical data related therein, then seem to have been interpreted into geometrical patterns and designs. Finally, all of that appears to have found an expression in the creative artwork of ancient cultures. The mathematical models and the geometrical designs seem to allow for distinct interpretations and ma Read More

SCI.SPACE FAQ No. 12 - space/astronaut SPACE/ASTRONAUT - How to Become an Astronaut Last-modified: $Date: 94/03/01 17:24:33 $ HOW TO BECOME AN ASTRONAUT There is a mailing list for those interested in sharing information on the astronaut -selection process. If you would like to join, send mail to astronaut -candidates-request@camis.stanford.edu (contact geoff@hisnext.Stanford.EDU (Geoffrey Rutledge)). First the short form, authored by Henry Spencer, then an official NASA announcement. Q. How do I become an astronaut? A. We will assume you mean a NASA astronaut , since it's probably impossible for a non-Russian to get into the cosmonaut corps (paying passengers are not professional cosmonauts), and the other nations have so few astronauts (and fly even fewer) that you're better off hoping t Read More

Space Elevators, Space Hotels, and Space Tourism

Votes:0
current revision: 11 July 2000 first publication: 4 August 1998 Space Elevators, Space Hotels, and Space Tourism Abstract: This document describes a conceptual design for a transportation system which could be built to carry passengers into space for tourism. It's futuristic only in that it has not been built yet. It does not rely on warp drive or any other magic technology, but rather adapts concepts developed or proposed for NASA activities. The system is based on a "space elevator" and space hotel in low Earth orbit. The hotel would orbit 775 miles above the Earth, and would suspend a space dock 160 miles above the Earth, via a hanging tether. Passengers and cargo would be brought to the dock by a new suborbital reusable launch vehicle, and would travel up the tether via a spa Read More

SPACE NO SPACE! In 1969 we first landed on the moon's surface. At the time it was a great leap of technology and everyone started to dream about space travel in the near future.Well it's been over 30 years since then and we have not gone further into space that the moon. In the mid 70's even the moon became a less attractive objective as the astronauts did'nt do anything accept collect rocks, all of which could have been done on the first mission. So,what have we done since? The Russians had a permenant space station in orbit (Mir).Designed to orbit for 3-5 years,it had in fact lasted for a little over 17 years even though it was falling to pieces, they had one.But it has now had it's last mission and has re-entered Earths atmosphere. There was Skylab, but that only lasted 6 years before it burn Read More

Space Settlement

Space Settlements spreading life throughout the solar system "I know that humans will colonize the solar system and one day go beyond." Mike Griffin, NASA Administrator. Humanity has the power to fill outer space with life. Today our solar system is filled with plasma, gas, dust, rock, and radiation -- but very little life; just a thin film around the third rock from the Sun. We can change that. In the 1970's Princeton physicist Gerard O'Neill with the help of NASA Ames Research Center and Stanford University showed that we can build giant orbiting spaceships and live in them. These orbital space colonies could be wonderful places to live; about the size of a California beach town and endowed with weightless recreation, fantastic views, freedom, elbow-room in spades, and great wealth. Space Settlements spreading life throughout the solar system "I know humans will colonize the solar system and one day go beyond." Mike Griffen Chief NASA Administrator, 2005. This web site is about living and working in orbit; not just for few months, but on evolutionary time scales; where Life evolves inside of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of kilometer-scale, artificial, orbital habitats. Earth-based Life's establishment of these settlements would be an evolutionary event of a magnitude similar to, if not greater than, ocean-based Life's colonization of land half a billion years ago. Basics Who? Pioneers at first, billions of ordinary people later. What? Artificial ecosystems inside gigantic rotating, pressurized spacecraft shielded from radiation. Where? In orbit; near Earth Read More

Viking 1 & 2 Mission to Mars The Viking mission to Mars sent twin spacecraft to the Red Planet. This image shows a model of one of the Viking spacecraft, each of which was made of two parts: an orbiter and a lander. The orbiter's initial job was to survey the planet for a suitable landing site. Later the orbiter's instruments studied the planet and its atmosphere, while the orbiter acted as a radio relay station for transmitting lander data. Once on the surface of Mars, the lander surveyed the soil, wind, and atmosphere and conducted numerous experiments to determine the existence of past or present life. Orbiter Construction Once the Viking orbiters were attached to their lander pods they were positioned inside the nose cones of Titan Centaur launch vehicles. The landers were folded up in Read More
