Grasslands Watershed Management -- Introduction

Votes:0
Introduction T he primary focus of this site is forage and pasture production information for South Carolina, although most of the information would be appropriate for the humid Southeast. The site name, Grasslands Watershed Management, is used to help emphasize the role pasture and forage crop production can play in helping insure a clean, safe water supply. G rasslands provide a valuable natural resource in agricultural production systems. Properly managed forages can supply 100% of the nutrients required by ruminants. Although harvested forages and grain supplements are used, and in drought conditions required, they typically cost 2 to 4 times more than grazed pasture. A well managed pasture involves managing forages and livestock in such a way as to reduce runoff, increase nutrient cyc Read More

HOME | FEEDBACK | SITEMAP LCBP Home > Water Quality Water Quality As recently as 20 years ago, the Basin experienced serious water pollution and public health problems from the discharge of untreated sewage and wastes. Since then, water quality has improved as a result of required industrial waste treatment, and a large investment of state, federal, municipal and private funds for sewage treatment facilities. However, additional clean-up must also address nonpoint source runoff from urban and agricultural areas. Nonpoint source runoff can include pollutants such as nutrients, low levels of persistent toxic substances, and pathogens. Remote Sensing Project

This project was developed to correlate field measured agronomic properties with satellite data and aerial photography . The large amounts of data from the satellite scenes and on-the-go yield monitoring maps are handled with relatively new methods of data mining ( SMILEY ) and data prospecting in conjunction with neural networks to find relationships between remotely sensed and ground-truth data. Agronomic, soil, and ground water data have been collected from a Best Management Practices site and a Management Systems Evaluation Area site in a 2000 ha irrigation test area near Oakes, ND since 1990. Agricultural practices have also been inventoried in the test area since 1986. The test area provides a unique opportunity to compare agricultural practices at the watershed scale with remotely s Read More

Soil and Water Conservation BMPs for Groundwater Protection from Pesticides

Votes:0
Soil and Water Conservation BMPs for Groundwater Protection from Pesticide AE-1115, July 1996 Bruce Seelig, Water Quality Specialist Maintenance of soil organic matter through soil conservation practices plays an important role in providing a healthy environment for crop growth. Soil organic matter influences soil nutrient levels and physical conditions that control the exchange of water and gasses between plant and soil. Healthy plants are less likely to develop pest problems, reducing the need for pesticide applications. Soil organic matter also is the primary substance that adsorbs or attenuates the movement of pesticides through the soil profile. As organic matter decreases, so does the soil's ability to adsorb pesticides that move through it. Organic matter also plays an important rol Read More
