Votes:0 Soil-Forming Minerals and Rocks, and the Weathering Process Soil is primarily the result of disintegration and decomposition of the minerals contained within rocks. The kind of soil and its nutrient status found in a given locality is a function of the material from which it weathered, referred to as 'parent material' of the soil. You can begin to appreciate the importance of geology to the study of soil. The purpose of this lab is to provide an understanding of weathering processes. The term 'mineral' may be used in three different contexts: Crystalline substance having definite physical structure and composition. Minerals, such as quartz, which may be classified, and they are the building blocks of rocks. Rocks, in turn, may be classified on the basis of their mineralogical composition. Read More Go to Site

Ikawa Department of Agronomy and Soil Science, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, University of Hawaii at Manoa Introduction Acid soils, by definition, are those with pH below 7.0. The lower the pH, the more acid is the soil. Each unit pH drop indicates ten times more acidity. For example, pH 5.0 has 10 times more acidity than pH 6.0, and 100 times more acidity than pH 7.0. Most Hawaii soils have pH ranging from 4.0 to 8.0, and many have pH below 6.0. Table 1 lists pH of some common items for comparison. Votes:0 The Soil Foodweb: It's Importance in Ecosystem Health Soil Foodweb Significance The structure and function of the soil foodweb has been suggested as a prime indicator of ecosystem health (Coleman, et al. 1992; Klopatek, et al. 1993). Measurement of disrupted soil processes, decreased bacterial or fungal activity, decreased fungal or bacterial biomass, changes in the ratio of fungal to bacterial biomass relative to expected ratios for particular ecosystems, decreases in the number or diversity of protozoa, and a change in nematode numbers, nematode community structure or maturity index, can serve to indicate a problem long before the natural vegetation is lost or human health problems occur (Bongers, 1990; Klopatek et al. 1993). Votes:0 North Carolina State University - NCCES - Forest Soils and Site Index FOREST SOILS AND SITE INDEX Updated 10/2/95 Soil quality is the most important factor in forest management
decisions. Soils will determine which tree species yields the
greatest timber volume, the time to harvest, and ultimately, the
investment a landowner must make to yield an acceptable economic
return from forest management. Soils vary greatly in their ability to produce merchantable
volumes of pulpwood, sawtimber, veneer, poles, piling or other wood
products in a reasonable period of time. The old saying "plant
your sorry, worn-out acres to trees" has been followed by many an
unwary landowner. In fact, as with any other crop, the better the
land, the more productive the forest. Landowners must be aware of
