Cleopatra VII: The end of laxism Ptomely XII Auletes died in 51 BC leaving the power in the hands of his two oldest children: Cleopatra VII (18 years old) and Ptolemy XIII (10 years old). Following the Egyptian tradition, Cleopatra got married with her own brother. At the age of 18, she became the ruler of Upper and Lower Egypt. A very heavy destiny for this young promising queen. Descendant of the Greek culture, she inherited the Greek knowledge brought by Alexander the Great and the Egyptian culture. She had knowledge in litterature, mathematics, astronomy, medecine,... She could even ride a horse. All that knowledge wouldn't have been useful if she wasn't talented for languages. She could speak easily with people from neightbouring countries without translators. Arsinoe (are-SIN-oh-uh) was born in Macedonia, the northern Greek province which had expanded under Alexander the Great to dominate much of the Mediterranean world. Because no single leader was influential enough to take Alexander's place, upon his death the kingdom was divided among his generals. Arsinoe's father, Ptolemy, received one of the prize pieces: Egypt and Libya. He and his family settled in Alexandria, the great new city set on a ridge in the Nile Delta. Here Arsinoe probably received a finishing-school education. At sixteen, Arsinoe was married to Lysimachus, a 45-year-old military leader from the Greek province of Thrace. Thrace Read More

All about Egypt, pyramids, temple reconstructions and the pharaohs. Free screen savers and hieroglyphics - you can write your name in the ancient script. Discovering Egypt Mark Millmore's Ancient Egypt Ancient Egyptian history covers a continuous period of over three thousand years. To put this in perspective - most modern countries count their histories in hundreds of years. Only modern China can come anywhere near this in terms of historical continuity. Egyptian culture declined and disappeared nearly two thousand years ago. The last vestiges of the living culture ceased to exist in AD 391 when the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I closed all pagan temples throughout the Roman Empire. It was not until Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798 that the wonderful artefacts of the Egyptians were se Read More

Egypt: Rulers, Kings and Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt: Cleopatra VII & Ptolemy XIII

Votes:0
Cleopatra VII Ptolemaic Dynasty In the springtime of 51 BC, Ptolemy Auletes died and left his kingdom in his will to his eighteen year old daughter, Cleopatra, and her younger brother Ptolemy XIII who was twelve at the time. Cleopatra was born in 69 BC in Alexandria, Egypt. She had two older sisters, Cleopatra VI and Berenice IV as well as a younger sister, Arsinoe IV. There were two younger brothers as well, Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV. It is thought that Cleopatra VI may have died as a child and Auletes had Berenice beheaded. At Ptolemy Auletes' death, Pompey, a Roman leader, was left in charge of the children. During the two centuries that preceded Ptolemy Auletes death, the Ptolemies were allied with the Romans. The Ptolemies' strength was failing and the Roman Empire was rising. City Read More

Egyptian Kings (Pharaohs), Governors and other Rulers The Kings of Egypt were not called Pharaohs by the ancient Egyptians. This word was used by the Greeks and Hebrews, and today is commonly used for the ancient Kings of Egypt. We really do not know how many kings ruled in Egypt, for at times in its ancient past the country was split up, and there were at least several kings at the same time. There was also probably kings who ruled regions of Egypt before recorded history, and in fact, several ancient historians record legendary Pharaohs who became Egyptian gods. King Hassan II

Images of Daily Life in Morocco King Hassan II Rabat, Royal Palace King Hassan II has been on the throne since 1962, when he succeeded his late father, Sultan Mohammed V. Hassan is one of the few true autocrats in the world. Despite the appearances of a constitutional democracy, Hassan rules supreme. Part of his legitimacy is rooted in his family (the Alaouis) historical relationship to the Prophet Mohammed. Hassan is a direct descendant of the Prophet's son in law, Ali. Hassan is considered head of the faith, Islamic "commander of the faithful," in Morocco. The Alaouis, known for their piety and scholarship, were invited to settle in Morocco in the 1200s A.D., and rose to power in their native oasis district in southeast Morocco, the Tafilalt, in the early 1600s. My Majesty knoweth that he is Divine. I did it under his command; it was he who led me. I conceived no works without his doing; it was he who gave me directions. I slept not because of his temple; I erred not from that which he commanded. My heart was wise before my Father; I entered into the affairs of his heart.
