Infectious Diseases in Children: Routine skin tests cannot controlpediatric TB

Votes:0
Routine skin tests cannot control pediatric TB TB skin tests produce too many false-positive results; contact investigations are the key. [TB resurgence] [Test wisely] [Alternate methods] [SIDEBAR: Why TB made a comeback] [SIDEBAR: Clearing confusing TB terminology] [Your turn] February 1997 NEW YORK — If pediatricians want to control tuberculosis, Jeffrey Starke, MD, advised them to put down their skin tests and get out in their communities. "We in our own offices don't keep children from getting TB," Starke said at the Infectious Diseases in Children symposium here. "It is the health department, either by doing a good job or a bad job of TB control, that largely controls whether children will be getting sick with TB. One of our most important activities as pediatricia Read More

Radiology cases, Tuberculosis.

This document includes General Skeleton and Spine cases. Tuberculosis. Tuberculosis of the skeleton is a pathology that was rare in recent times, except in those areas where there is recent immigration from the third world. Since more than a third of our catchment population is from Gujerat in India, we are used to seeing tuberculosis of bone. The advent of AIDS means that others are now sharing our experience. Since tuberculosis is a disease of malnutrition or sub-nutrition, we should hope that the demographers and politicians can get the numbers right and keep the world food production ahead of our burgeoning population (biofuels for people not overlarge vehicles). A more sobering development is the emergence of antibiotic resistance from undertreatment in a failure of public health prov Read More

TB ANTIGENS.

TB ANTIGENS. X-ray Structural Studies of M. tuberculosis Antigens. Mycobacteria secrete the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) which forms part of their resistance to oxidative killing by host phagocytic cells. Professor Douglas Young at St Mary's Medical School (London) has cloned and expressed this enzyme which subsequently crystallised and yielded diffraction data to 2.0 Angstroms. The structure has been refined to an R-factor of 0.167 and shows that this enzyme consists of two domains with the catalytic ferric ion located between. The N-terminal domain consists of an extended region followed by two long antiparallel helical segments which form an arm-like structure. The C-terminal domain consists of four more helices and has a three-stranded beta-sheet inserted between the enzyme's 4th Read More

Tuberculosis

by Bi Puranen SUMMARY Table of contents Aims, sources and area of study The Disposition of the Thesis Results Present and Future Aims, sources and area of study IN THIS DISSERTATION, the occurrence of tuberculosis and its causes are studied with special attention to the development in Sweden. The perspective is a comparative one. Secular trends as well as short-term fluctuations are analysed. A common criticism of analyses based on causes of death is that the diagnoses are not exact, that they changed over a period of time, and that they were based on symptoms (nosology) and not causes (etiology). Pulmonary tuberculosis, however, is a disease that is relatively easy to diagnose in its lethal stages. The genus of the bacillus epidemicus is also stable and the extent of the disease is suffic Read More

Tuberculosis in Yunnan

Controlling TB in China's Yunnan Province by Jim Mullins I t is September in China's central Yunnan Province and the fall harvest is well underway. Tall stacks of pale green tobacco leaves are piled high by the roadside, while broad swaths of yellow corn ripen in the warm autumn sun. In the rice fields, farmers beat a rhythmic staccato as they strike thick sheaves of grain against the sides of wooden tubs. The air is pungent with the rich smoke of burning rice stalks. Today, Li Shidai must take the afternoon off from his fields to visit the Jingchuan County anti-epidemic station in nearby Dujing Township. He regrets time away from the harvest, but he is grateful that he is able to work at all. The 52-year-old farmer was diagnosed with tuberculosis six months ago and, under the supervision Read More
