Unit: Reptiles 1 Introduction REPTILIA The reptiles evolved during the late Carboniferous* or early Permian* periods, from the amphibian line although the time of this transition is not clearly known. A line of ancient amphibians, called the Anthracosaurs have skulls which are very similar to those of early reptiles, and it is difficult to know whether these animals should be called reptiles or amphibians. One such animal was Seymouria from the early Permian, which shows the reptilian feature of a single occipital condyle* (amphibians have two condyles) but retains the amphibian feature of lateral line canals.
