Colorado Springs SCENIC DRIVE Colorado Springs: Pikes Peak Pikes Peak is one of two 14,000-foot mountains in Colorado that has a paved road to its summit. The other is Mount Evans west of Denver. To reach the Pikes Peak Highway, take the exit from Highway 24 west of Colorado Springs near the town of Cascade. This drive takes you to the top of America's most famous mountain, which stood as a 14,110-foot beacon to pioneers and became a symbol for the Rocky Mountain gold rush in 1859. Lieutenant Zebulon Pike discovered it on his 1806 government expedition, but he didn't climb it. It was early winter when he arrived; his men had only ragged summer clothing, little food and were worn out from crossing the Great Plains on America's first Western expedition. Pike was not disappointed. He believed Read More

Ogden River Scenic Byway (Hwy. 39) Hwy 39 runs up the narrow and winding Ogden Canyon along the Ogden River, passes Pineview Reservoir and traverses lush Ogden Valley and then climbs easily into the modest, but pretty Monte Cristo range. The first 8 miles from Ogden to Pineview Reservoir has the most impressive canyon scenery. Further on the route is pleasant and less crowded. The route is especially attractive in fall as the leaves change color. The route is about 45 miles long one way and paved. Trapper's Loop Road Scenic Backway (Hwy. 167) This scenic backway runs between Huntsville and Mountain Green along the eastern side of the Wasatch range.
