ParenTalk Newsletter: Preschoolers: Helping the Physically Active Child Learn to Read

Helping the Physically Active Child Learn to Read by Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D. Highly energetic kids often have a hard time sitting still long enough to enjoy reading. For these kids, you need to provide reading assistance "on the run" as it were. Teach these kids the alphabet by having them run their letters. Go out to a large paved area, such as a driveway or playground and write the letters of the alphabet in chalk, so that they're several feet high. Then have him walk, hop, or run along the chalk lines of each letter. When he begins to read his first books, let him pick them up and walk around as he reads if he wants to. After he's read a while, suggest he get together with some other kids to put on a play. Let him act out sight words using pantomime. Assign body gestures to di Read More

How to Teach Your Preschooler to Read Also See: http://anchorsandsails.tripod.com/howtoteachyourchildtoread Bev Jaremko B.A. Prof. Teaching Certificate A Teacher in Calgary Alberta Canada. Why teach your child to read? Reading is a gateway to success in industrialized society. It is heartbreaking but true that students who can?t read well have trouble not only in language class but in all other subjects that require reading and even in written tests in phys ed. Unfortunately too, when a child does not read well after a certain age, we commonly do not blame the method that people used to teach him which may well be at fault, but we blame him. This does great damage to his self-esteem and to his will to try. He may give up on himself and quit school early denying for himself even the chance Read More

Reading before they walk Researcher challenges when children should read HAMMOND, Louisiana (CNN) -- By the government's own estimates, 40 percent of the nation's 8 year-olds cannot read independently. Is there a better way to teach children to read? Maybe the answer is, the earlier, the better. Most children learn to read in the first grade, at age six. But what if they could learn to read before they learn to walk? "I would be skeptical, too, if I hadn't lived through it myself," says Dr. Robert Titzer, a researcher in infant learning. If your child is: INFANT TO 3 YEARS (AN EXCELLENT TIME TO START) If you are the parent of a newborn, this is a great time to start our technique, because the average child will watch 5000 hours of television by the time he enters first grade. If your child is in this age group, you should consider carefully how these 5000 hours will be spent. Obviously, those parents who use television primarily with our educational tapes have the best results. If your child is going to watch television, help make that experience useful and beneficial as well as entertaining. 4 YEARS OR OLDER AND IS ALREADY WATCHING TELEVIS Read More

Infants 2-4 year-olds 5-6 year-olds 7-8 year-olds 9-10 year-olds 11-12 year-olds Children who grow up loving books usually grow to love reading. Children who read typically earn good grades and achieve many things in life. Books can help children in many ways. They can be used to help children discuss fears and concerns, learn virtues and life lessons, solve problems, pursue hobbies, develop strategies for making responsible decisions, learn about other cultures, and improve school grades. In addition, reading together and discussing themes in books strengthens the bond between parent and child, enriches language, broadens experiences, increases attention span, broadens vocabulary, and strengthens comprehension. Further, children whose parents read to them often grow up enjoying reading. R Read More
