SEARCH My AWF | Shop | Adopt an Animal | Safaris | DONATE With tourism and human populations encroaching on their territory, baboons have been know to kidnap crying human infants confusing them as their own young. Home > Wildlife > Baboon Baboon Physical Characteristics The baboon, of all the primates in East Africa, most frequently interacts with people. Apart from humans, baboons are the most adaptable of the ground-dwelling primates and live in a wide variety of habitats. Intelligent and crafty, they can be agricultural pests, so they are treated as vermin rather than wildlife. The two most common baboons occur in East Africa, the olive baboon and the yellow baboon. The larger and darker olive baboon is found in Uganda, west and central Kenya and northern Tanzania. Smaller, more slender Read More

Baboon

Baboon Papio hamadryas Baboons are the largest members of the monkey family, possessing heads with long, naked, dog-like muzzles. Some species have patches of bright red, blue or purple skin on their face, chest, or rump. Depending on the species, baboons weigh approximately 14 to 40 kg with females being about half the size of males. Baboons live in well-organized troops, and the individual is only secure within his own troop. Large, dominant males rule the group and are responsible for keeping order between quarrelsome members and for protecting the group from predators. Their principal enemy is the leopard, but even leopards will avoid an encounter with the larger, adult males who are courageous and vicious adversaries. Baboons walk on all four limbs, with their tails (which in some spe Read More

An animal that belongs to a highly complex social structure - one that's very similar to ours. In order to study human behavior, scientists and psychologists are interested in the study of non-human primates such as the baboons, because they feel that they can be more objective that way. When we study ourselves, it is as if we're looking at a mirror image of ourselves - and it's hard to stay objective. (You don't always see yourself as you really are when you look in a mirror.) When we study baboons we can be more observant and Read More

He had seen several lions with a fresh kill and we were heading there in hopes of some great pictures. We saw these Baboons sitting behind a tree and had to stop and photograph them as they performed their grooming on their leader. As it turned out the Lions were gone. It just goes to show that a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. Photo taken near Letaba Camp, Kruger National Park, South Africa. Early morning with Kodachrome 64 Female Baboon. Essay: A Baboon’s Life

Essay A BABOON’S LIFE Male-on-Male Violence, Aging and Friendship On the Savannah By Robert Sapolsky or the past 20 years, I’ve spent my summers studying the behavior of wild baboons in the Serengeti of East Africa. These baboons are smart animals with individualistic personalities, and they live up to 25-year life spans in large social groups. During my time with them, I’ve experienced the shock of mortality, watching baboons who used to be terrors of the savanna become hobbled with arthritis and shuddering at the withered state of a male who was a subadult primate (like me) in the 1970s, when I began my work. An East African baboon, flanked by the author and assistant, Richard Kones They have gotten old on me, and as they’ve grown gray, I’ve come to understand th Read More
