Votes:0
November 1, 1998 DNA Tests Offer Evidence That Jefferson Fathered a Child With His Slave By DINITIA SMITH and NICHOLAS WADE NA tests performed on the descendants of Thomas Jefferson's family and of Jefferson's young slave, Sally Hemings, offer compelling new evidence that the third president of the United States fathered at least one of her children as has long been speculated, according to an article in the next issue of the scientific journal Nature. The report is based on blood samples collected by Eugene A. Foster, a retired pathologist who lives in Charlottesville, Va. The finding undercuts the position of historians who have long said that Jefferson did not have a liaison with the slave some 28 years his junior and confirms, but with a surprising twist, the oral tradition that has be Read More

Six Historic Americans: Thomas Jefferson

Library : Historical Documents : John Remsburg : Six Historic Americans : Chapter 2 Six Historic Americans Thomas Jefferson by John E. Remsburg Had Jefferson's works been edited by some pious churchman who would have expunged or modified his radical sentiments; or had his works been suppressed after they were published, as some desired, the clergy might with less fear of exposure claim that their author was a Christian. But while his writings are accessible to the public, it adds nothing to their reputation for candor to make the claims respecting his belief which many of them do; for these writings clearly prove that he was not a Christian, but a Freethinker. The "Memoirs, Correspondence and Miscellanies from the Papers of Thomas Jefferson," edited by Thomas Jefferson Randolph, a grandson Read More

The Life of Thomas Jefferson

The Life of Thomas Jefferson By B.L. Rayner Published in 1832 The Life of Thomas Jefferson was written by B.L. Rayner six years after Jefferson's death. As the author notes in the preface of his book, "the materials for this volume are principally derived from the posthumous works of Mr. Jefferson himself." Rayner describes Jefferson's voluminous letters and essays written over fifty years as "the richest auto-biographical deposit·.ever presented to the world." He also notes that "the historical and biographical portions" of his book are based on "this pregnant source." The author concludes by recommending that "the character of Thomas Jefferson should be held up to all succeeding generations of American people as the model on which they should habitually fix their eyes, and fashion their Read More
