Votes:0 Melbourne University's Hydrogen Car In the 1970s, prompted by the oil crisis, Melbourne University promoted research into alternative fuels for cars - the birth of the Hydrogen Car project. Nowadays, the hydrogen car is more promising for the its cleaner operation. In petrol engines, incomplete combustion produces harmful hydrocarbons, which are released into the air thorugh exhaust fumes. Pure hydrogen, on the other hand, burns cleanly, combining with oxygen to produce water. But using pure hydrogen for fuel is problematic. It burns so readily that ingenious modifications must be made to prevent the engine from firing in an uncontrolled manner. Backfires were common in early prototypes of the hydrogen engine. Votes:0 Published by Australian Academy of Science KEY TEXT Which way ahead for hydrogen cars? This topic is sponsored by the Australian Government's National Innovation Awareness Strategy . Rising petrol prices and diminishing oil supplies may drive motorists to demand alternative forms of fuel – such as hydrogen. You will get more from this topic if you have mastered the basics of energy – these links will take you to an annotated list of sites with helpful background information. Competitors in the men's and women's marathons at the 2000 Sydney Olympics had an exciting glimpse of the future. The pace vehicle that led them round the 42-kilometre circuit looked like a typical family wagon, but looks were deceptive. Is There a 'Green' Car in Your Future? Getting people to switch from a gas-guzzling sport utility vehicle to a fuel-saving two-seater may seem like a stretch, but anything's possible in an age of rising gasoline prices and concerns about our climate's stability. Look at the Ford Motor Company. It dropped out of a coalition that opposed increasing technology efficiency to avoid climate change. The auto maker then vowed it would voluntarily improve the efficiency of the Ford Escape, its next light truck model, by 25%. ORNL's Center for Transportatio Read More Go to Site

Honda's Insight-ful hybrid combines a gasoline engine and an electric motor. Courtesy Honda Highly bred POSTED 4 JAN 2001 The new millennium is bringing a millennial change to the family car. A few years back, concerns about pollution -- and nagging worries about global warming and oil shortages -- led to a trickle of electric cars powered by batteries. Because the batteries were heavy and expensive, the cars didn't drive far enough between recharges. Government incentives failed to move many cars from the showroom to the street. But batteries are not the only way to power an electric car. In 2000, Honda and Toyota both started selling "hybrid" electric cars that Read More Go to Site
