Alaska's Blooming Beauties

Votes:0
Image by Jeremy Welcome to Alaska’s Blooming Beauties! We have been learning about Alaska and wanted to learn about wildflowers but couldn't find anything in the kids section at the library, or on the web, on this topic so we decided to make a helpful webpage. Our focus is for kids like us to learn about Alaska’s wildflowers in a fun way. We also tried to make this site teacher friendly and useful. We were fortunate enough to be able to attend a college lecture by Verna Pratt, a well known Naturalist in the Anchorage area. Although there are over 1,500 species of wild flowers in Alaska, we chose our favorites to give you a glimpse of Alaska’s vast beauty. You can enjoy these flowers in many national parks and areas throughout the State, but please don’t pick them becaus Read More

EEK! - A Tree's True Color

Votes:0
. Why Do Leaves Change Color? Where do leaf colors come from? How do leaves change color? Do leaves change color because of weather? Why do leaves fall? While you were playing in the hot sun during summer vacation, the trees on the streets, in the parks and in the forests were working hard to keep you cool. To feed the shiny green leaves that make shade, trees use sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugar. This is called photosynthesis . Now it's autumn, and you're ready -- okay, almost ready -- to go back to school. Those hardworking trees, on the other hand, need to take a break from all that photosynthesizing. When leaves change color, from green to yellow, bright orange or red, you'll know trees are beginning their long winter's rest. Where do leaf colors come from? Leaf Read More

Photosynthesis

Sambal's Science Web Photosynthesis [ Home ] [ Up ] Green plants are producers . This means that they can survive without animals! They can make lots of organic chemicals from a few simple inorganic chemicals. They need simple things like carbon dioxide and water and can make complex things like sugar, starch, fat, and proteins. Plants get their nutrients from the environment. Carbon dioxide comes from the air (unless they are aquatic plants, in which case they get it from the water surrounding them). They get water from the soil. They also need other inorganic nutrients like nitrate, sulphate and phosphate. A few plants cannot get nitrate out of the soil so they have to eat animals to get the nitrogen which they must have for growth. Animals are consumers ; they cannot carry out photosynt Read More

This visual key is based on leaf shapes, margins, and their arrangement on a stem. You can use it to identify plants, even when they are not in bloom. (This nontraditional key is designed to help you key out a limited number of plants during months when floristic characteristics are not visible.) Directions - Look at the three habitats below. Plants and Our Environment

Plants And Our Environment This web site is about plants. You will learn about how plants grow and the different parts of a plant. We will tell you how seeds travel and what bees do to help plants. At our web site, you will also learn about plants and their relationship with animals. Students and teachers, be sure to check out our page with plant activities. Please sign our guestbook and let us know what you think. We created a survey for you to fill out because we would like to learn about plants and animals where you live. We decided to make this web site to be used as a reference for people studying plants. In the fall of 1997 our fourth grade class did a unit on plants and found little information on the web. We also did a unit on endangered animals, so we decided to gather information Read More
