[ All photos were taken by Keith Rowan using 800 ASA Fugicolor SuperG+ film with a 50mm lens SLR on a tripod ] Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) was discovered on July 23, 1995 by two astronomers, Alan Hale and Thoamas Bopp. The comet has an approximate diameter of 10-25 miles (large for a comet) and it's tail streched for tens of millions of miles into space. Comet Hale-Bopp made it's closest approach to Earth on the evening of March 22, 1997 and was most likely the brightest comet seen so far this century! So bright was this comet that it was plainly visible with the naked-eye in urban areas for over a month. It last passed through our solar system around 2214 BC and Read More

Steve Lee's Page of Astronomy Welcome! I have one of the best possible jobs in the world for an amateur astronomer. I work as a night assistant at the Anglo-Australian Observatory , which means that I get in on the action of professional astronomy, plus I get to live and pursue my hobby under dark skies away from the big city. If you want to see more of what I do, follow the following links... The obligatory construction sign implies that I'm constantly working on these pages. My work. If you want to find out more about what I do at the AAT. My hobby. To learn more about my telescopes, other aspects of my hobby, or just to see some of the images I've taken. ASTROCRUISE - Astrophotography by Philip Perkins

T hank you for visiting.. Please spend a few minutes sharing my photographic adventure. How nice it would be if we could walk out on a starry night and simply see the splendours of the cosmos. But the distances within our macrocosm are so vast that much of it can only be seen by means of long exposure photographs. This is the reason for the photographs presented here. To us on earth all of this seems far away, but in astronomical terms most of the objects presented on these pages are close neighbours. Our neighbourhood in space is our natural heritage - the earth and all of its life forms evolved from the same elements that gave light to these photographs. Since we are children of the cosmos, it is unavoidably important to our future. I do astrophotography from both my home location in Wil Read More

Astro-Imaging Video, Webcam and CCD Imaging Electronic astronomy is now becoming more affordable. Astronomical CCD cameras are getting better and cheaper every year. Webcam Astronomy CCD Imaging Piggyback Photography Using a tripod mounted camera with a standard 50mm lens, exposures of about 30 or 40 seconds duration are possible before the Earth's rotation becomes apparent. The celestial sphere will be dragged across the film plane causing stars to appear as short arcs centred on the pole position (currently near Polaris). Longer focal length lenses worsen the problem. Exposures have to be made shorter to prevent star trails from becoming visible. Attaching a camera to an equatorial mounting allows exposure times to be increased, since the camera can track the celestial sphere as the Eart Read More

Astrophotography Piggybacked astrophotgraphy: Advice on the net regarding astrophotography is sketchy at best. Everyone shows their photos, but few tell you how they were taken. Piggybacked means to mount a camera on the telescope's optical tube and shoot through a standard or telephoto lens. The telescope is used only as a platform and the clock drive keeps the camera centred on the celestial object being photographed while the shutter remains open. You only need minimal equipment to engage in piggyback photography. A camera(manual or electronic SLRs work best) that can keep its shutter open for up to 3-10 min.(has a 'b' setting), a clock driven telescope aligned to polaris, a shutter release cable(air types work best), and a piggyback mount for your particular scope is all you need to ge Read More

Please note the new address of this site is www.amateurastronomy.co.uk Welcome to my Amateur Astronomy Page. My name is Paul and I'm a keen amateur astronomer living in Hampshire, UK, about 30 miles west of London. This page shows that it is possible to carry out astrophotography, even when living in light polluted suburbs, if a modern CCD camera is used. My main interest is deep sky photography and many of the pictures on this site are examples of galaxies and nebulae. I also enjoy photographing the moon and planets so I have included some planetary and lunar photographs as well. Click on the links in the yellow bar at the left to see the pictures. There is more information included in these pages than could have fit into the article. You will find notes, drawings, and more photographs of edge-on galaxies. I also include my full observing list of over forty bright edge-on galaxies in the Spring sky. Included in this list is object data for the galaxies in the Spring sky with aspect ratios greater than 4 and magnitudes brighter than 12. All told, there are about 40 galaxies. The source for the data was "The Deep Sky Field Guide to Uranometria 2000.0". Of course, there may be many interesting edge-on galaxies fainter than magnitude 12. updated another passion Alaska the beautiful CCD AMATEUR ASTRONOMY What's beyond the border of our home planet excites the imagination. Astronomy can thrill each and every one of us. A very approachable science on many levels. Astronomy, one of the few sciences enjoyed by novice observer and experienced scientist alike. The challenge is how to bring these wonders to the forefront of everyones thinking & to rouse our curiosity in the heavens. We need to arrest the decline in young people entering astronomy at both an amateur and professional level. We ALL need to explore, discover, and aid in the awaking in others. Jim Cheetham - Kites - Night Flying - Photography

Votes:0
Night Flying - Photography The simplest way to photograph LED-lit kites is to put the camera on a stable tripod, set the shutter for 10 to 15 seconds, then fly the kite through the field of view. Other lighting tricks can be used - standard camera flash, torches (I use a D6 Maglite) and so on. I'll be trying strobe flash, as soon as I can get hold of the equipment. We haven't yet tried video, but that's next on the list. Be aware of background light. The orange sodium lights of a built-up area soon build up to overwhelm the light of your kite, cars have an annoying habit of swinging their headlights through the field of view, and I've even been caught out by a 15 mile distant lighthouse! However, if your background is properly dark, you'll have to make some area light on every fourth expos Read More

Get out there and shoot! Welcome to Moonlight Photography. This page is about taking photographs in moonlight. I like taking mine at about 2AM to make certain it's only moonlight (plus those pesky pole lights and streetlights). Notice in the picture above, the headlight trails on the distant highway. In the picture below, it was getting cloudy quick, I barely got this shot in. Because of the longer exposure time, the nightlights on inside showed up like fully lit rooms! How to do it? I use ASA 400 film, f1.7, and a sixty second exposure in full moon. There are only about 36 days a year you can shoot, and th Read More

Photo Know-How - Tech Tips - Night Photography

Votes:0
Tech Tips Series - Night Photography by Michael Reese Much During my career as a commercial/architectural photographer I was frequently called upon to do night photographs. For many years I approached the exposure problem by either relying on published tables or bracketing extensively. Finally, out of frustration I decided to work out a series of dependable exposures. The basic requirements for night photography are a camera which is capable of locking the shutter open (B setting), a sturdy tripod and a self-locking cable release. Since most skyline/urban shots are lit with a stew of light sources (tungsten, fluorescent, sodium vapor, mercury vapor, lucalox...) the color will generally not be true, but I have found a 40 magenta filter yields acceptable color balance. WELCOME TO THE by Brendan Downs Last updated 21st January, 2007. Created 19th May, 1996 Please email me brdowns@gil.com.au ( Best viewed in 800 * 600 SVGA) The Thunderchild is the name of my backyard observatory, located in suburban Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. The skies are far from ideal, but better than a lot of near by areas in Brisbane. The LMC, SMC and the Coalsack are still visible to the naked eye and so are areas of the Milky Way. But of course they are no where as good as being at a good dark site. Please turn off unnecessary outside lights, if not to save the wonderful views of the night sky that are available, then to save yourself some money. --> "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." - Oscar Wilde Taking pictures of the night sky is easier than you think. Just load some film, mount the camera on a tripod and open the shutter for a few seconds. You don't need an expensive telescope or other sophisticated equipment to be an astrophotographer. If you've taken pictures of a sunset or thin crescent moon then you've already been exposed to this great hobby. I hope the following information will provided you with some ideas of your own regarding astrophotography. I tried to cover all the major topics concerning simple "wide field" tripod astrophotography from equipment to final photograph.
