Ancient Coral Reefs

Ancient Coral Reefs Corals appeared about 475 million years ago as a result of the association of jellyfish-like animals and single-celled plants within the same compound organism. Thirty million years later, reef-like structures dominated by coralline skeletons were widespread, and have been particularly well studied on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. Here, several kilometres from an ancient shoreline, many kinds of corals grew in warm water about a metre below the level of low tide. Overturned and broken coral colonies indicate the repeated passage of storms. The equator then passed through Canada in a north-south direction, and Ontario was in the tropics. However, slowly retreating seas reflect the large volumes of water that were being stored in African ice sheets. Home Discover Nature! Na Read More

Reefs And Atolls Of The Australian Outback

Science News Share Blog Cite Print Email Bookmark Reefs And Atolls Of The Australian Outback ScienceDaily (Jul. 31, 2000) — When the Australian explorer Charles Sturt went looking for an inland sea, he wasn’t wrong; just a few million years too late. Oceans once covered great areas of what is now inland Australia. Their traces remain in fossils, minerals and geological formations that reveal much about how Earth has changed over time. Roth, A. A. --- Fossil Reefs and Time

FOSSIL REEFS AND TIME Ariel A. Roth Geoscience Research Institute Origins 22(2):86-104 (1995). WHAT THIS ARTICLE IS ABOUT Ancient fossil reefs found within Earth's sedimentary rocks are considered to be a challenge to the biblical concept of creation. Their presence is regarded as favoring models which propose that life developed gradually over many millions of years. The problem for the biblical model is that an abundance of time is required to grow a reef and the hundreds of fossil reefs found would require so much time to develop that they cannot be accommodated into the biblical time framework of a recent creation a few thousand years ago. Do these fossil reefs really negate the biblical account of beginnings? There are alternative interpretations that do not require long ages. For ins Read More

The White-Inyo Mountains

Localities of the Cambrian: The White-Inyo Mountains Along the California-Nevada border north of Death Valley, the White Mountains, the Inyo Mountains, and associated ranges present one of the most important and best-known Late Proterozoic to Cambrian sections in the United States. Starting with the unfossiliferous Precambrian rocks of the Wyman Formation, paleontologists can work their way through a complete section that documents the appearance of various animals and protists, starting about 540 million years ago. Precambrian, Cambrian, and later Paleozoic rocks are also exposed to the south of the White-Inyo region, in Death Valley and in various ranges of the Mojave Desert. We bring you the intrepid undergraduate students of Dr. Jere Lipps, climbing up "Rowland's Reef," located in the Read More
