In my games ... Ya gotta be mean to make Olympics lean

August 2, 1996 IN MY GAMES ... Ya gotta be mean to make Olympics lean By STEVE SIMMONS Toronto Sun ATLANTA -- There is nothing wrong with the Olympic Games that a good cosmetic surgeon couldn't fix. A nip here. A tuck there. A little liposuction. A major facelift. The truth is, the Games have become too big, too long, with too many sports and too many athletes. You have heard about the X-Games? These are the Games of Excess. The Olympics still are filled with moments of magic and grace and excellence, and there has been no shortage of them here. But too often they end up like the bus drivers of Atlanta - completely lost. Somewhere in time, the Games lost both their charm and their fitness. That isn't about Atlanta and the mess these Olympics have been. This is about the sports themselves, Read More

Home Library Interact Explore Cool Stuff Site Guide Library > Sydney 2000 > Sports > Modern Pentathlon The basic premise behind the modern pentathlon is that a soldier is ordered to deliver a message. He starts out on the back of an unfamiliar horse, but is forced to dismount and fight a duel with swords. He escapes, but is trapped and has to shoot his way out with a pistol. Then he swims across a river and finally he finishes his assignment by running 400m through the woods. Under current regulations pent-athletes begin by firing 20 shots with an air pistol at a target 10m away. A ball's eye earns 10 points. A total score of 172 out of 200 points is worth 1000 pentathlon points. Every target point or blow is worth plus or minus 12 pentathlon points. In fencing, the athletes use eppe sword Read More

Modern Pentathlon Overview

Votes:0
10:57 PM 7/2/1996 Modern Pentathlon Overview U.S. Roster It is said that the acknowledged father of the Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, built the Olympics just so he could have a place to put on the pentathlon. The scenario of a soldier showing supreme athletic prowess in the name of his country was how de Coubertin imagined the Games. And indeed the pentathlon competition is based on an athlete (soldier) riding horseback to deliver his orders. The athlete then fights off enemies with sword and pistol. Finally, he swims and runs to his ultimate destination. Thus, there are the five events of the pentathlon. But one thing de Courbertin certainly never fathomed when he was thinking up the pentathlon was its television appeal. When it was spread over two, three, sometimes even five Read More

The Times: Sport:Women shoulder Britain's hopes in sport of the military

Votes:0
August 3 2000 MODERN PENTATHLON Women shoulder Britain's hopes in sport of the military BY DAVID POWELL Links THEY are changing the guard in modern pentathlon, the sport that owes its existence to its military roots. As Steph Cook and Kate Allenby became the first women to be named for a Great Britain Olympic team yesterday, the men made less welcome history. For the first time since the sport was introduced into the Olympics in 1912, Britain's men will not be represented. "We have to admit that this is as a result of failing to bring through a generation of young modern pentathletes," Dominic Mahony, the Great Britain team manager and 1988 Olympic team bronze medal-winner, said. "It stems from the pre-Lottery days in the Nineties, when we suffered successive cuts in funding and lost our c Read More
