WHAT IS THE GREAT WHITE SHARK? The Great White Shark is the scariest shark. It's teeth are razor shark, and strong enough to saw through wood. The Great White is between 12-16 feet long, and can grow up to 19-21 feet. There is another main reason why the Great White is the most feared fish for humans. People are also afraid because of shark attacks. Most Great White attacks are not fatal, also, the Great White is not even a man-eater. It is one of the largest sharks, with the longest individual ever measured having been a female 5.5 m (18.2 feet) in total length. There are reports of individuals up to 7.4 m (24 feet) in length, but these are probably erroneous. The males of this species are sexually mature between 226 and 290 cm (7.4 to 9.5 feet), while females mature at a maximum length of 250 to 350 cm (8.2 to 11.5 feet). Shark feared extinct is found By Discoverychannel.ca Staff , April 14, 1997 Some local fishermen in Malaysia have made a remarkable discovery -they've caught a shark long thought to be extinct. Conservationists say the shark is the first of its kind found in the area in over 100 years. The Borneo River Shark is the rarest of all freshwater species of sharks and rays. Scientists with The World Conservation Union have been working with the Department of Fisheries in Northern Borneo for over a year to see if they could find a live one. Some local fisherman managed to catch one in the Kinabatangan River of Sabah in Northern Borneo, and notified authorities. "The family led us to the tank of formalin which they had been keeping locked up at the back of their stilt house," reported conservationi Read More

Introduction to the Chondrichthyes

Votes:0
Introduction to the Chondrichthyes Jaws Sharks, skates, rays, and even stranger fish make up the Chondrichthyes, or "cartilaginous fish." First appearing on Earth almost 450 million years ago, cartilaginous fish today include both fearsome predators and harmless mollusc-eaters (harmless, that is, unless you are a mollusc). A number of shark and ray species are fished, commercially or for sport. Members of the Chondrichthyes all lack true bone and have a skeleton made of cartilage (the flexible material you can feel in your nose and ears). Only their teeth, and sometimes their vertebrae, are calcified; this calcified cartilage has a different structure from that of true bone. Thus, preservation of the whole body of a cartilaginous fish only takes place under special conditions. This complet Read More

Back in the Miocene Epoch, about 17 million years ago, the sharks that bore these teeth lived in the warm, shallow sea that covered southern Maryland. Luxuriant growths of sea algae and succulent aquatic plants that flourished here provided abundant food for marine life. Among the vertebrate inhabitants wer Read More

Trisha is a photographer, and Rusty used to be a photo/journalist. We plan to use our interest in scuba diving and photography to launch us into new careers. Our love for sharks has taken us to the Bahamas where we went on a few shark dives surrounded by well over a hundred sharks at once. We have only been diving since February 1996, but we have already logged in over 20 dives, which isn't too bad since we don't have much time to get to the coastal Read More

This attack rate is surprisingly low considering that thousands of people swim, surf and dive in Hawaiian waters every day. Despite these statistics, shark attacks remain a highly emotive topic in Hawaii. This reaction is unsurprising in a state that is economi Read More
