Votes:0 Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory AST/RO is a 1.7 meter diameter submillimeter-wave telescope in operation
at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station since January 1995. Because of its exceptionally
cold and dry atmosphere, the South Pole is the best ground-based observatory site for
astronomical observations at submillimeter wavelengths. The scientific program
is currently focused on spectroscopic observations of atomic and molecular clouds
in the Milky Way and other galaxies. AST/RO invites observing proposals from the astronomical community.
Since travel to the South Pole is not possible during Austral winter (Feb.-Oct.),
observations on AST/RO are performed by a winterover scientist in residence at

Votes:0 The Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory ASTROPHYSICS Radio Astronomy at Cambridge Radio astronomy is the study of celestial objects by means of the
natural radio waves they emit. It tells us about the Solar System, our
own Galaxy (the Milky Way), radio galaxies, quasars and cosmology. The
signals emitted by radio sources can be received from the most distant
parts of the Universe, though they are very weak when they reach
us. Some of the problems are fundamental, like star formation, the
energy sources of pulsars, quasars and radio galaxies, and the
evolution of the Universe. They cannot be answered in terrestrial
laboratories. Other problems are more technical like the design of
highly sensitive receivers and computer software for telescope control
and image analysis. These techniques are Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Information en franÇais --> The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory ( SNO ) results have provided
revolutionary insight into the properties of neutrinos and the core of the
sun. The detector, shown in the artist's conception below, was built 6800
feet under ground, in INCO's Creighton mine near Sudbury, Ontario. SNO is a heavy-water Cherenkov detector that is
designed to detect neutrinos produced by fusion reactions in the sun. It
uses 1000 tonnes of heavy water , on loan from
Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), contained in a 12 meter diameter
acrylic vessel. Neutrinos react with the
heavy water (D2O) to produce flashes of light called Cherenkov radiation.
This light is then detected by an array of 9600 photomultiplier tubes
mounted on a geodesic support stru Read More Go to Site

Typically twice a year, we coordinate a global
time-series photometry
campaign at ~10 observatories worldwide such that our target objects are visible from the night side of the planet 24 hours a day.
The objects have characteristic periods ranging from minutes to roughly an hour. The network is run interactively from HQ and we analyse our data
in near-real-time. The temporal spectrum we obtain allows us to probe
the interiors of our target objects using the technique of asteroseismology . For a more detailed overview, click here . Ed Nather (pictured above), who served as WET Director for the first deca Read More Go to Site
