		American History, Page 1, Spanish Conquest of Native America ^Votes:0 Hernando de Soto, one of the richest men in the world from the Conquest of Peru , explored America for a seaway to China in order to trade Spain's New World gold. He followed trails which we use as highways. Eyewitness reporters described Natives along those trails at places which are cities again today. Conquest Trails through 18 States are presented here. Cabeza de Vaca was the first European to explore America's Gulf Coast States . While in Houston (circled on the map at right), visiting Natives convinced him that a "wealthy" tribe and an ocean were located north of there. After meeting with Coronado and DeSoto , in Mexico and Spain, their 1539 Conquest Trails would lead there. Disappointed, both would reverse direction directly above Houston.
