Votes:0 How It All Started A few years ago, a friend in Connecticut sent me a CD recording
by an Irish woman singer she would soon be seeing/hearing. Coincidentally,
I recognized the name as a musician John Jennings had mentioned as recording a
cover of Mary Chapin Carpenter's wonderful song, Moon and St. Christopher - which had intrigued me, but I had not yet tracked down the recording of that particular song. The year was 1993, the gift recording was No Frontiers , and the artiste was Mary
Black. I suspect that neither my friend nor I knew the revelations that this gift would bring
to my ears and brain, concert attendance, music tastes, spending habits, or even the people from around the world that I would meet - face-to-face or keyboard-to-keyboard - through Mary Black's music! At a performance Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 ?Peter, Paul and Mary are folk singers.? So stated the liner notes to the group?s self-titled 1962 debut album. Today, this declaration seems redundant, because the term ?folk music? has come to be virtually interchangeable with the group name, but when the words were written, they were meant less as a stylistic distinction than as a mission statement. In the decades prior to the ?60s, through the work of such avatars as Woody Guthrie, the Weavers and Pete Seeger, folk music had become identified with sociopolitical commentary, but the idiom had been forced underground in the Senator Joe McCarthy witch-hunting era of the late ?50s. By the time Peter, Paul and Mary arrived on the scene, for the majority of America, folk was viewed merely as a side-bar to pop music which employed acoustic in Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 The virtual base on which the whole of bluegrass music rests, William Smith (Bill) Monroe was born at Rosine, Kentucky, on September 13, 1911, the youngest of eight children. Brother Charlie was next youngest, having been born eight years earlier. This gap, coupled with Bill's poor eyesight, inhibited the youngest son from many of the usual play activities and gave him an introverted nature which carried through into later life. Aside from his musical family, one of Monroe's early influences was a black musician from Rosine, Arnold Schultz. Bill would gig with him and rated him a fine musician with an unrivalled feel for the blues. At this time he also started to hear gramophone records featuring such performers as Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers. In 1934, Radio WLS in Chicag Read More Go to Site
