EGYPTIAN MUSEUM The greatest collection of Egyptian antiquities is, without doubt, that of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo . It is a place of true discovery and, even after many visits, I continue to make new and delightful discoveries every time I venture into its many galleries. To be sure, the museum can be daunting in the sheer numbers of its antiquities on show, but there is an order within its layout and it is a dream come true for anyone wanting to study Egyptian antiquities. However, the negative side is that the environmental and display conditions leave a great deal to be desired. Labels on some exhibits date from early in the century and many items have no labels at all. Guidebooks are available at the museum, although they are limited to some of the major items. The museum's groun Read More

Iransaga - A History of Persian Art Through The Centuries

Votes:0
Persian Art Through The Centuries The long prehistoric period in Iran, is known to us mostly from excavation work carried out in a few key sites, which has led to a chronology of distinct periods, each one characterised by the development of certain types of pottery, artefacts and architecture. Pottery is one of the oldest Persian art forms, and examples have been unearthed from burial mounds (Tappeh), dating back from the 5 th millennium BC. The "Animal style" which uses decorative animal motifs is very strong in the Persian culture first appearing in pottery, reappearing much later in the Luristan bronzes and again in Scythian art. During the Achaemenian and Sassanian periods, metal-work continued its ornamental development. Some of the most beautiful examples of metal-ware are gilded si Read More

russian /english About Project Virtual museums are not novelty in INTERNET. There exist already some sites of this kind ( www.museum.ru ). But though original and high-qualitative, these expositions are still comparable with traditional museum editions of artistic albums, catalogues, monographies, while INTERNET makes it possible to create qualitatively new expositions, realizing methods of presenting monuments of historical and artistic inheritage, impossible or incompatible before. What makes the originality of the museum, you are "entering"? The main peculiarity is that exhibits actually kept in quite different museums, in different countries and even on different continents are gathered here as if in one museum. Another important feature is that our "museum" combines an exposition of a Read More

? A N I NTERNET M USEUM ? This site is dedicated to the exhibition and interpretation of Spanish colonial military artifacts from that vast region of southeastern North America which once comprised the Spanish Floridas and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Spanish Guale, Luisiana, and Tejas . While other materials are included in the illustrative displays, the interpretive emphasis of this site has been placed upon military clothing and, as they evolved, uniform-related artifacts: the buttons, strap and accoutrement buckles, and insignia worn by Spain's regular, provincial, and urban militia forces in the study region. The period of interpretation is from ca. 1539—when Hernando de Soto began his epic journey of exploration in what is now the southeastern region of the United States—t Read More

The Estonian State Maritime Museum (Meremuuseum) Eesti versioon The museum exhibits the general history of shipping and fishing in Estonia. Since 1978, the museum is active in underwater archaeology, and is now responsible for the nation's underwater cultural heritage. The museum has its own research ship Mare , a modern side scan sonar and a remote operated vehicle to search for sunken ships. The Baltic Sea is unique because it is a brackish sea where a sunken ship will be preserved for centuries. The Estonian coast is special, since during the previous Soviet time, very little wreck diving took place. Presently the museum's archaeologists are locating so many wrecks that it will take many years to investigate them. Among recent projects are the P?rnu cog shipfind and the Maasilinn wreck Read More

Volterra: Etruscan Guarnacci Museum

Votes:0
The Guarnacci museum is one of the earliest public museums in Europe. Founded in 1761 when the noble abbot Mario Guarnacci (Volterra 1701-1785) , a collector of antiquities, donated his archeological collection to “the citizens of the city of Volterra”. The donation also included a rich library of more than 50.000 volumes. A far-sighted gesture, for Guarnacci not only prevented the dispersal of the treasured contents of the burial sites but also bequeathed a prestigious cultural heritage to Volterra. Guarnacci, an erudite historian also published Le Origini Italiche, Lucca 1767 ;a controversial publication that generated vivacious criticism from historical circles thus attracting the attention of great intellectuals such as Giovanni Lami, Scipione Maffei and Anton Francesco Gori Read More
