Contact_FullName: Vicky Contact_Email: vanclan@dwave.net date:: 01/19/02 Area: Learning centers Idea: For years I placed the wooden puzzles in my classroom, and encouraged my children to go put a puzzle together. I came up with an idea several years ago that works great and creates a reason/motivation for the children to go put together puzzles. I purchased a couple 3 minute egg timers (the kind where the children can see the sand running through the glass). Then I made a book called "Beat The Timer Club" I made a list of the children's names, then a made30 copies of this list as that is how many wooden puzzles I have and I numbered the pages like a book. Next I put a little sticker on each wooden puzzle giving it a number from 1-30. The children know that they can go to the cent Read More

Numerical Integration: Introduction

Votes:0
Numerical Integration: Accumulating Rates of Change The fundamental theorem of calculus tells us that if we know the rate of change of some quantity, then adding up (or integrating ) the rate of change over some interval will give the total change in that quantity over the same interval. For example, if a car is moving along a straight line and we know the speed of the car as a function of time, it is possible to determine the total change in the car's position over some time interval. But what if we don't know a formula for the car's velocity, but we only have measured its velocity at certain instants of time? Is it possible to "integrate" this discrete data in order to estimate the change in the car's position? If so, how? In this lab we learn to model functions that produce experimental Read More

SEDL - SCIMAST Classroom Compass

These activities reinforce students' understanding by using rhythm, physical action, and introspection. Learning psychologist Howard Gardner proposed that each learner reflects his or her unique combination of intellectual strengths and weaknesses. Gardner's theory of seven intelligences (linguistic, mathematical, spatial, musical, intrapersonal, interpersonal, bodily-kinesthetic) has inspired many educators to present content in a variety of ways so individual students' learning preferences might be awakened and connected to their intellectual strengths. The place value activities presented here suggest alternatives to traditional textbook problem solving. These activities are designed to be used during a mathematics lesson, but the concepts could be incorporated across the curriculum: se Read More

The Most Colorful Math of All

The Most Colorful Math of All The Mathematics Behind the Maps How many different colors must you have available if you want to color a map so that countries that share a boundary line are not colored the same color? In the mid-1800's this problem became known among a small group of mathematicians as a popular unsolved problem. Even at that time, it was common knowledge among map-makers that 4 colors seemed to be sufficient to color a map. This wasn't actually proved, however, until 1976. Even though we now know that 4 colors is enough to color any map, some maps can be colored with fewer colors--three colors or even two. Finding a method to determine exactly how many colors is needed for any map continues to daunt mathematicians today. Some mathematicians believe that a fast method to find Read More
