Antonia Novello Antonia Novello was the first female and the first Hispanic to be Surgeon General of the United States. Antonia is a leader of 6,500 employees of the Public Health Service. She was born in 1944 in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. When Antonia Novello was eight years old her father died. Antonia and her brothers were raised by their mother who was a schoolteacher. Antonia Novello suffered from a chronic illness of the colon (a section of the large intestine). Every summer she had a treatment for the disease. She also learned how it felt to be a helpless patient. When she was 18 years old she had surgery so she would be healthy again. April 29, 1934, Maracaibo, Venezuela Aparicio played shortstop for the Chicago White Sox for ten years (1956-1962, 1968-1970). He helped lead the White Sox to the 1959 American League pennant. Aparicio led the American League in stolen bases nine consecutive seasons, 1956-64. He won the Golden Glove award eleven times, was named to eight All-Star teams, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984, eleven years after he retired. Father Junipero Serra (1713-1784) He was born Miguel Jose Serra at Petra on the Spanish Island of Mallorca, Spain. At the age of 16 he traveled to Palma, the capital of Mallorca, and entered the service of the Catholic Church, the Order of St. Francis of Assisi and took a new first name, Junipero . Serra stood just 5 feet, 2 inches tall. He received a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Luliana in Palma and taught at the Convent of San Francisco in Palma. In 1750, Serra volunteered to serve the Franciscan missions in the new world and left Cadiz, Spain and sailed for Vera Cruz, Mexico, at the age of 36. Chavez was named after his grandfather, who escaped from slavery on a Mexican ranch and arrived in Arizona during the 1880s. Chavez' grandparents homesteaded more than one hundred acres in the Gila Valley and raised 14 children. Chavez' father, Librado, started his family in 1924 when he married Juana Estrada. Cesar was the second of their six children. Librado worked on the family ranch and owned a store in the Gila Valley. The family lived in an apartment above the store.
