Cymdeithas Madog

Votes:0
==================== Cymdeithas Madog , the Welsh Studies Institute in North America Inc., is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to helping North Americans learn, use and enjoy the Welsh language. It takes its name from Madog ab Owain Gwynedd, a Welsh prince who sailed (according to legend) to America in the 12th century. That makes him a fitting symbol of the cultural and linguistic links which Cymdeithas Madog maintains between Wales and the New World. Cymdeithas Madog is a clearinghouse for information about Welsh language resources. We can help you find Welsh literature, publications from Wales, books about Wales and Welsh in Welsh and English, Welsh music, and Welsh resources on the internet. The Welsh language is alive and active, and is waiting for you. So don't delay. Read More

The language of Wales - read the signposts, ask the way

The Welsh Language Welsh is an ancient Celtic gaelic language, of the same family as Cornish and Breton gaelic. Scots and irish gaelic are of a slightly different root. To illustrate the differences, my mother who spoke Welsh before she learnt English, could understand the Breton tongue, but was lost with the Irish gaelic! Today around 20% of all people in Wales speak Welsh fluently, so the language is very much a living language. The visitor to Wales is unlikely to have to speak any Welsh, but an understanding of the language will make your trip more enjoyable The spoken language is lyrical and flowing, poetic in sound. But the written language is difficult to come to grips with. Here are a few aids to understanding the Welsh alphabet does not have the letters - j, k, q, v, x, z it has on Read More

Traditional Welsh Costume and Recipes- a resource for busy school children.

Welsh costume and recipes - notes intended to help with school projects. This picture (taken in 1913) depicts a young lady wearing the popular concept of 19th Century Welsh costume. The hat, made of black felt, has a high crown and wide brim, and is worn over a lace cap. This young lady wears a red flannel shawl over a crisp white blouse. The skirt is full and made of wool with a black and white check pattern. Grown up ladies would have worn a full length skirt, and a white starched apron. Proper Welsh ladies always wore black woollen stockings and black shoes. A basket, made from willow withies would often be carried. (More detailed information on costume and the Welsh hat ) We also have a Welsh flag in colour and a Welsh flag line drawing suitable for colouring. If you have a printer con Read More
