BASIC SOCIAL CASTES OF SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES There are six distinct castes in a termite colony; the primary reproductives (the queen and the king), the workers, the secondary reproductives, the soldiers, and the swarmers. The following are more detailed descriptions of these castes. The PRIMARY REPRODUCTIVES are responsible for mating and producing eggs. The king mates with the queen the first year, which produces a core group of workers to supply the new colony with food. As winter nears, the colony moves below the frost line. In the spring, the king mates with the queen a second time, after which his job for the colony is done. The queen's abdomen undergoes an elongation metamorphosis, which prepares the queen to produce eggs at a rate of about 100 per minute for up to 25 years. The WORK Read More

Educational Resource Guide #2 Termite Infestation, Damage and Control Barb Ogg, Extension Educator Subterranean termites are destructive wood-eating insects and cause home-owners frustration and expense when active nests are found in their houses. This can be especially troublesome when selling a home because lending institutions (banks, savings and loans, FHA, VA) require houses certified to be termite free before lending money to home buyers. Presence of an old infestation or damage that has been treated should not require the home be retreated. A Lincoln real estate agent estimated that about 10% of her house sales have required treatment after the discovery of an active termite nest in the house. Because subterranean termites nest in the soil and need protection from the elements when Read More

Termite World by Chris W. Termite is a common name for a group of insects that live in communities like ants do. Termites are closely related to cockroaches and grasshoppers. There are three groups in most termite colonies. Some reproduce, some are workers, and some are soldiers. They are dark colored, have eyes, fairly hard bodies and fully developed wings. Each colony of termites has a king and a queen. Every mature colony develops young winged termites that leave the nest, search for food and water for the colony, and build tunnels. The soldiers ,which are also wingless and blind, are larger than workers. They have enormous hard heads, powerful jaws, and strong legs. Next Insect Back to the Bookshelf Read More

LINKS Transvaal Museum index South Africa Entomology Links Identification Fees Insects Index page TERMITES Termites (Order Isoptera) were included in the BIG 12 because they are the great insect architects. With their social system, they are capable of establishing "insect cities" far taller than a man. Some of the African termites such as Macrotermes are amongst the greatest insect builders in the world. Apart from their ability as architects, termites play an important role in ecology and agriculture, where they may help to recycle nutrients and aerate the soil. However, some termites are also considered to be pests, and the harvester termite Hodotermes mosambicus may devour vast quantities of grass every year. Identifying and understanding the behavior of these pests is the first step in creating an effective pest control plan. By Paul Fisette - ? 2002 Carpenter ants and termites are wood-destroying insects that cost us billions of dollars every year. More than 90% of the homes in the US are wood framed. But even homes built of masonry and steel serve up delicious wood treats to these pests. Left unchecked, they systematically destroy our homes and valuable wood objects in them. UC-016 DESERT TERMITES Thomas W. Fuchs Extension Entomologist Darrell N. Ueckert Texas Agricultural Experiment Station and Bastiaan M. Drees Extension Entomologist Desert termites, Gnathamitermes tubiformans (Buckley), occur in southern New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and northern Mexico. This species constructs fragile tubes and sheetings around the surfaces of herbaceous and woody plants (Fig. 1), litter, dung, fence posts, etc. on which it feeds. The termites do not tunnel into wood, but rather remove only surface materials. The "carton" tubes and sheetings can cover 6 percent or more of the soil surface during May through September on shortgrass rangeland in western Texas. Being readily apparent on over-grazed rangelands or during droughts, the tubes and sheetings cause great concern to ra Read More

&nbsp Log on to our chats and forum. Termites Eastern Subterranean Termites Termites are a social insect that lives in large colonies. King and Queen termites have been known to live as long as 25 years. Swarming can occur after the colony reaches a certain size (After 2-3 years or 4-6 years, researchers tend to disagree over this.) When conditions are favorable, usually on warm or humid days, the colony can send out immature kings/queens and attempt to found a new colony. Major signs of termite presence can include "pencil-size" mud tubes constructed over the surface of foundation walls, mud protruding from cracks between boards and beams, and a distinctly hollow sound from infested wood and/or extreme softness when probed with a knife. Termites are not a do-it-yourself problem. Termites Read More

Equipped with a cast iron stomach that digests cellulose materials , these insects can chew their way through dense wood, layers of paint, concrete and brick. Termites have been part of the earth's recycling system for a long time. A fossil termite dated to approximately 200 million years ago attests to the adaptability of this unwelcomed guest. Two hundred years ago, termites invaded a stack of oak wood timbers being seasoned in a shipyard in France. Minibeast Profiles: Termites by Gary A. Dunn.M.S., F.R.E.S., Director of Education Most termites live in tropical and subtropical environments. They build nests in soil, earthen mounds, or wood. Of the 41 species of termites that live in the United States, most of them occur in the southwest. The spread of termites into the temperate region has been in assisted by our desire to construct wood buildings and other structures that provide termites with food, moisture and shelter. At first glance many people think that termites resemble "white ants". A closer inspection reveals several prominent differences. The termites have a thorax which is broadly joined to the abdomen (ants have a constricted, "hourglass" waist); termite antennae are straight and composed of bead-like segments (ants have Read More

There are other kinds but, they're not nearly as common in the US. You'll have to check the links at the end of the page to learn about them. This discussion applies only to subterranean termites. This page may help you tell which kind of termite you have, but it didn't seem too helpful to me. If you decide you have drywood termites go here . Homeowners' insurance will help recover losses from fires, storms and earthquakes, but it is almost impossible to carry insurance against termite infestation. Termites are pests because they feed voraciously on wood and may also destroy paper products such as books, cardboard, boxes and a variety of other items. They cause very extensive damage to buildings, and endanger lives when they attack building foundations and beams that are made of wood. Even buildings with steel framing and masonry walls are targets because of the wooden door and window frames, cabinets and shelving within the buildings. Subterranean Termite, Reticulitermes sp. Symptoms : Typical signs of termite infestations include swarming of winged adults in the spring and occasionally fall, mud tubes 1/ 4 to 1/2 inch wide constructed over the surface of foundation walls, mud protruding from cracks between boards and beams, and hollow sounds from infested wood when it is tapped or extreme softness when probed with a knife. Sometimes you will actually observe termite workers and/or soldiers when damaged wood is probed. Termites feed slowly and there is no need to panic. Life Cycle : In a typical termite colony, the king and queen are the only active reproductives; they perform no other function. They are fed by the other termites, and some have lived up to 25 years. Entomology Termite Biology Update Although there are 47 different species of termites in the U.S., Iowa is fortunate to have only one species that consistently attacks houses and other structures, the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes. Research on this termite has yielded the following interesting information. Termite Demographics. Termite population studies in Canada and Florida have brought changes to our "best guess" about the number of termites you would expect to find in a termite colony. Earlier research had estimated termite colony size at about 60,000 individuals, but the new research finds populations to be much, much larger. Termite populations are estimated by the same technique used by animal ecologists to measure bird or fish populations; that is, the mark- Read More

Termites A termite is a name given to numerous species of social insects that can damage wooden structures. Most of the about 2000 known species are distributed in the tropical countries. Some inhabit the temperate regions of North and South America, while only two species have established in southern Europe. Termites are also known as white ants , based on similarities in the appearance and habits of these insects. Although true ants belong to a more advanced insect order that includes the bees and the wasps, termites have developed patterns that are almost as complicated as those of the ants , bees, and wasps. Termites display patterns of social behavior that are almost as so as those of the ants , social bees, and wasps. Read More

Most people should have concern about termites if they are homeowners. The key word is concern , not panic. Subterranean Termites? role in nature is to breakdown fallen trees by consuming them and returning their nutrients back into the soil. Unfortunately, we build our homes from dead trees and they don?t know the difference. A BRIEF OVERVIEW --These insects live in colonies deep in the ground, usually 15 to 20 feet below the surface. However, the workers [the ones that cause damage] can travel more than 100 yards seeking food for the colony. These workers are small white, wingless and blind. The homeowner seldom sees these, unless they are doing some construction or renovation, as these insects cannot live exposed to the atmosphere. They usually come up through cracks in a slab or founda Read More

Of such "social" insects, the termites have the most striking division of labor between their castes of royalty, nobility, soldiers and workers. Although commonly called "white ants", they are not ants at all. They shun the light and open air. TERMITES The queen termite looks like a giant sausage. The queen is the largest termite of the nest. Her body is bloated and is full of eggs. Termites build their nests to fit in with their surroundings. The termites plaster their nests to trees. The umbrella nest is good for heavy rainfalls! The queen termite will lay 30 000 eggs a day. That is 3 eggs every 3 seconds. The nests are well organised and each termite has a special job to do. Not all termites look the same, it depends on which job they do. Back to Contents Page Read More

Typical signs of termite infestations include swarming of winged adults in the spring and occasionally autumn. A "swarm" is a group of adults that leave their nest to establish a new colony. Swarming occurs when a colony reaches a certain size. Emergence is stimulated when temperature and moisture conditions are favorable, usually on warm days following rainfall. Other signs of termite presence include "pencil-size" mud tubes constructed over the surface of foundation walls, mud protruding from cracks between boards and beams, and hollow sounds from infested wood when it is tapped, or extreme softness when probed with a knife. Termites feed slowly and there is no need to panic. Description: Subterranean termites are social insects that live in nests or colonies in the soil. Each colony con Read More

The Eastern Subterranean Termite

The Eastern Subterranean Termite The eastern subterranean termite (EST) is the most damaging urban pest, costing more than $1 billion annually for control and repair to damaged structures. Difficulty in controlling termites is largely due to their social nature (i.e., they live in colonies). The colony usually is located in the soil and comprises three castes: workers, soldiers and reproductives. Aerial infestations with no ground connection are also known to occur, provided adequate food and moisture are available. All castes must be present for colony survival. Current control methods focus on the use of a chemical barrier to exclude termites from an area. This does not kill the colony, however. Toxic baits are being developed that will eliminate colonies with significantly less pesticid Read More
