Cat Flea DESCRIPTION: The cat flea is about 1/16 inch long, dark brown, and flattened from side to side. It has strong hind legs and can jump from the host dog or cat to other surfaces. The immature stages are maggot like. BIOLOGY: ( Ctenocephalides felis ) The adult flea remains on the host and periodically sucks blood. The eggs are laid in the fur but they fall to the ground. The larval stages are in carpeting or other substrates and feed on organic matter and the dried blood feces of the adult flea. SOLUTION: Animals should be treated to reduce the adult fleas. Vacuuming will remove eggs and larval food from carpet, but not the larvae. Shampooing will kill larvae, insecticide treatment will also provide control. Back Read More

Hydrex Pest Control - Fleas

Fleas There are several different types of fleas that can be found in this area, all similar in behavior and appearance. Adult fleas are parasites that feed off the blood of a host such as a pet or person, giving them the ability to spread disease. In their immature larval stage, fleas feed on dried blood they get from adult fleas or pets. They are around 1/8" long, dark colored, and flat. Being flattened side-to-side makes them difficult to squash, and allows them freedom to move through hair. With an ability to jump 6" high, they have no problem getting on and off their host quickly. Fleas can be difficult to control because of their large numbers, small size, even smaller eggs, and their ability to go a long time without feeding. FLEAS Adult fleas are small insects (under ¼ inch) of dark reddish-brown color. They lack wings and have laterally compressed bodies enabling them to move easily through body hairs. They have three pairs of legs with the back pair modified for jumping. There are several kinds of fleas . Adults of each live on the blood of animals and must have it to reproduce. Each species of flea prefers to live and feed on a certain kind of animal but when hungry will attack a wide variety of warm-blooded animals including humans. The cat flea is the most common and is usually the species found on cats and dogsand in homes. The dog flea looks and acts like the cat flea but is much less common. The true human flea is the least common. Human fleas may occur in homes which are dirty and which have large amo Read More

Department of Medical Entomology Fleas modified from: Kettle, D.S. (1995). Medical and Veterinary Entomology . CAB International. Wallingford Natural History Clinical Presentation Laboratory Diagnosis Treatment and Control Confirmation and Enquiries bottom of page Natural History Fleas are highly specialised bloodsucking parasites belonging to the order of insects called Siphonaptera, which means "wingless siphon". They have a formidable reputation of claiming more victims than all the wars ever fought, as a result of the "bubonic" (Black Death) plague they spread throughout the world in the 14th century causing the deaths of over 200 million people. Now, these insects are better known for their irritation and pest status worldwide. Fleas are light brown to mahogany in Read More

Birds Rodents Cockroaches Silverfish Carpenter Ants Fleas Fleas (various species) The majority of flea infestations occur in homes with pets, but they can also be a problem in homes without. Fleas will live outside, can be picked up and brought indoors by a pet or even on your pant-leg or shoe. Fleas will bite almost any animal as well as humans. Aside from the often itchy bite of a flea, they can cause allergic reactions and transmit disease, including the dog tapeworm which can also infect children. Cat fleas, the most commonly encountered fleas, are small, wingless insects, 2.5mm in length, and are reddish brown to dark brown in color. Fleas are excellent jumpers; leaping as high as 20cm. Fleas have a four stage lifecycle: egg, larvae, pupa, and adult. Females lay their eggs on the host Read More

Fleas Cat fleas are frequently encountered in homes and are common pests on domestic cats and dogs. Dog fleas look like cat fleas, but are rare in California. Fleas on either cats or dogs in California are most likely cat fleas. IDENTIFICATION Adult fleas are very small insects (up to 1/8 inch), so it is difficult to see a number of the characteristics used to describe them. These reddish brown to black, wingless insects are compressed from side to side so that they look like they are walking "on edge." They have piercing-sucking mouthparts through which they obtain blood meals from their hosts. Flea larvae are tiny (up to 1/16-3/16 inch), hairy, and wormlike with a distinct, brownish head, but no eyes or legs. LIFE CYCLE Female cat fleas remain on the host (unlike most other fle Read More

They lack wings and are extremely narrow side to side, which enables them to move easily through the body hairs. Their last pair of legs is modified for jumping. They have numerous spines and hairs on their body, and their mouthparts are adapted for piercing the skin and sucking blood. The whisker-like spines on and near the head are important characteristics used in the identification of fleas. Fleas and Flea Control A number of small arthropods can bite man and his animals. These include arachnids such as spiders, ticks, chiggers, and insects such as head or body lice, fleas, mosquitoes, biting flies, and others. All of these arthropods have different life cycles and biological requirements. Fleas are a particularly severe pest problem in many parts of the country. To properly develop an effective control program for fleas, it is necessary to first understand the biology of these insects. Fleas are insects with a very specialised body design. Like most insects, fleas have three pairs of legs, three body regions, and a pair of antennae. However, adult fleas lack wings. A flea's body design is specialised in that it has an oval and laterally flattened shape and large legs. This al Read More

Integrated Flea Control (007)

Top Ten Most Visited Web sites Educational Resource Guide #7 Integrated Flea Control by Barb Ogg, Ph.D., Extension Educator Every summer, many dog and cat owners in Nebraska are plagued by serious and persistent flea infestations. Sometimes even petless families have to deal with fleas after a visit to the pet store or after the kids have played with a neighborhood dog or cat. Flea bites can be mistaken for a rash; each bite has a small red spot in the center surrounded by a red halo. And unlike some other insect bites, there is not much swelling associated with flea bites. Fleas are small, dark brown insects whose bodies are hardened and compressed from side to side. If you looked at a flea under a microscope, you would see that it has strong hind legs that helps it jump from host to host Read More

biodiversity explorer Order: Siphonaptera (fleas) (Phylum: Arthropoda ; Class: Hexapoda ) A cat flea Ctenocephalides felis waits on the carpet for a passing cat, dog or human. Fleas are thought to have originated from fly-like ancestors. However, they look nothing like the conventional fly because their bodies have become considerably modified for surviving as parasites on vertebrates. For instance, the flattened body makes them difficult to grip hold of. Their amazing jumping ability enables them to make a fast getaway if they are discovered. Of the nearly 100 species of flea found in southern Africa, the Cat Flea, Ctenocephalides felis , which bites cats, dogs and humans, is usually the species responsible for causing human discomfort. FLEAS Fleas are external blood-sucking parasites that host on humans, dogs, cats, rats and other animals. They are often brought into homes by infested pet dogs and cats, or by rats. Fleas usually bite humans around the ankles and lower legs. The bite wound can develop into skin inflammation. Fleas are also carriers of human diseases, the most significant of which is the deadly plague, as well as murine typhus. Adult fleas are about 2 - 2.5mm long. The body is flattened vertically to enable them to move rapidly between the host's body hairs. Their legs are very well-developed and powerful, making them ideal for jumping. Fleas prefer warm and humid conditions and are attracted by the body warmth of the animal host. When the host dies, the fleas leave the body in search of another host. The Read More

The fleas most commonly encountered in Maine are dog and cat fleas. Fleas pass through a complete life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The clear-to-white eggs can be seen without magnification. Eggs are laid on pets or other warm blooded hosts but may be found wherever they fall off a flea infested pet. It takes from one to 12 days for the eggs to hatch. Urban IPM: Insects: Fleas

Urban Integrated Pest Management Fleas Fleas are small, wingless insects that feed on the blood of animals and people. Americans spend about $9 billion a year controlling fleas, which makes flea control one of the biggest expenses for pet owners. In Arizona, most flea problems are caused by the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis . This flea feeds on cats, dogs and wildlife. Cat fleas do not normally live on humans, but do bite people who handle infested animals. Flea bites cause small, red, itchy bumps, usually on the ankles and lower legs of humans. An integrated flea control program includes good sanitation and treatment of the pet and environment. You can eliminate fleas from your home with proper treatment, but it may take time, especially if the infestation is heavy. Sanitation Change pe Read More
