Antagonyms

Votes:0
Antagonyms Page revised on January 1, 1999 This is a word I made up to describe a single word that has meanings that contradict each other. My derivation of the word antagonyms is described below . Example of an Antagonym : A current example would be "BAD". There is the normal meaning and the slang meaning of "good" (sometimes pronounced baad for emphasis). Although I prefer words in which the antithetical definitions are listed in common dictionaries, I will accept well-known slang examples. As pointed out by Rex Stocklin (in list of acknowledgments below, see {T}), a number of antagonyms result from use of the prefix "re-". The meaning "again" may conflict with other meanings. We will continue to add these words to the list as we receive them. The Read More

A Spelling Test I compiled a list from many sources and edited it to 50 commonly misspelled words, making my choices based on my 11 years of experience as a copy editor. You can take the test (below) and see how you did right away. There are some spelling tips on another page. ( Hey! It's cheating if you look now!) Please note: Click the CORRECT spelling. The spellings considered correct are American spellings (because I'm an American). The preferred spelling will differ in the British Commonwealth in some cases (at least one that I'm sure of). "Variants" listed in your dictionary are not correct -- they are variants. That means people use them -- they are not preferred by educated editors. Ain't is also in your dictionary -- that does NOT mean it's correct. Other pages about spelling: Mor Read More

According to Bill Bryson [ The Mother Tongue: English And How It Got That Way [c.US$10]], "The source of this stricture... was one Robert Lowth, an eighteenth century clergyman and amateur grammarian whose A Short Introduction to English Grammar , published in 1762, enjoyed a long and distressingly influential life both in his native England and abroad." And further, that "...even he was not didactic about it. He recognized that ending a sentence with a preposition was idiomatic and common in both speech and informal writing. The Collective Noun Page

Votes:0
The Collective Nouns There are two varieties of collective noun listed here. When i receive a submission, i check all available sources for a reference. If i find one (in, for instance, a dictionary), i denote it here as a "submission". If i don't, i denote it a "suggestion". Feel free to submit a collective noun if you don't find it here. The goal is not (yet) to be comprehensive - merely entertaining. This list is alphabetical by the collective noun. You'll note that there are multiple listings for a few types, for instance, "a hive of bees" and "a swarm of bees". These typically refer to terms that stem from different types of collection. In the example, "hive" is from the domicile of bees, and "swarm" is from a group of flying bees. This will be noted, and derivation given, where possi Read More

The World's First Crossword - The History | Thinks.com

Home > Crossword Puzzles The World's First Crossword - The History Arthur Wynne had the job of devising the weekly puzzle page for Fun, the eight-page comic section of the New York World. When he devised what he called a Word-cross for the Christmas 1913 edition, published on 21 December he could have no idea that he would be starting a worldwide craze. The puzzle page had previously featured plenty of word squares, rebuses, hidden words, anagrams and connect-the-dots drawings. For this edition Wynne decided he would have something new. He sketched out a diamond-shaped grid, wrote FUN, the name of the comic section, across the top squares, and started filling in the rest of the grid. He numbered the squares at the start and end of each word, and wrote definition clues for the words he h Read More

The Yale Herald Crossword By Justin Weinberg In order to view the crosswords that I have written, you will need to download "Across Lite v. 1.2" from Literate Software Systems at www.litsoft.com . It had to happen... This is it. Many of you have followed my puzzles for the last four years sometimes even writing in (yes I read all of your emails!). But, after four years of college, students have the bad habit of graduating and I'm no exception. I hope to continue writing crosswords as a hobby in the future. I've really appreciated all of your support --- I can see that the World Wide Web has allowed me to reach much more than the Yale community with my work. In fact, if I do end up posting more puzzles, you will be able to find me with the major search engines. Without further ado, here's m Read More

"No, they were originated by Edward Stratemeyer in a series of strip cartoons about a character called Tom Swift. That was in the USA in the 1920s" Ed states decadently. The collection of Tom Swifties presented here has been built up over many years. It includes contributions from many sources - most are original. WIGGLE WORD puzzles

Votes:0
WIGGLE WORD puzzles © '96 The Byte Man John Knoderer www.MAZES.com - P O Box 235 - Sulphur Springs AR 72768 USA The idea of WIGGLE is to spell as many words as you can by moving from one letter to another adjacent letter in the squares below. You may move horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Do not skip letters (for example, you cannot spell "lamp" in Wiggle#1). You may come back to a letter and use it more than once in the same puzzle (for example, Wiggle#1 allows you to spell "quarter"). You may not stand or jump on a letter ("butter" in Wiggle#1 is an illegal word), but if there happened to be two of the same letter adjacent to each other, you could double that letter (I don't think any of these puzzles have double adjacent letters). How many words can you find? These 21 puzzles were Read More
