Aoudad, Ammotragus lervia, also know as the Barbary Sheep, information and photographic images.

Votes:0
AOUDAD The aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) is called the Barbary "Sheep", but it is not really a sheep. They come from North Africa on the Barbary Coast, and that is where they get their name. The aoudad evenly bridges the biological distance between sheep and goats, but they are a true species, and not a hybrid. They have the traits of both sheep and goats, and the proteins in their blood are 50% like sheep's and 50% like goats'. On this aoudad you can see the huge horn bases, the impressive neck mane, on the back and front, and the chaps. Aoudads are large animals with the average male weighing around 200lbs, but they can go from 110 to 350lbs. Male heights are 36 to 39", with the females usually five inches shorter than the males. Their weights range from 90 to 125lbs. Aoudads are tan with a Read More

bighorn

Your browser does not support script Peninsular bighorn sheep live on dry, rocky, low-elevation desert slopes, canyons, and washes from Palm Springs, California south into Baja California, Mexico. They eat primarily grasses, shrubs, and forbs-catclaw, encelia, sweetbush, and krameria, for instance-and are themselves eaten by mountain lions, wolves, bobcats, coyotes and golden eagles (who occasionally prey upon lambs). At the beginning of the 19th century, bighorn sheep in North America were estimated to number between 1.5 and 2 million; today fewer than 70,000 remain. In the late 1800's, hunting, competition from livestock grazing, and diseases introduced by domestic livestock devastated bighorn populations. Bighorn Sheep Ovis canadensis The Canadian population of this stocky muscular animal is restricted now to western Alberta and southern British Columbia. Adult males range in weight from 75 to 137 kg. The ewes, lambs, yearlings and young rams band together in groups led by an old ewe. They are joined in the autumn by the mature rams in time for the mating season. During the rutting season, the adult males engage in fierce jousting matches and crash head-on into each other with an impact that can be heard two kilometres away. Their chief predator is the cougar, but unattended kids are often taken by the golden eagle. Their heads, with their magnificent horns, are prized by hunters. Home Discover Nature! THE MOUNTAIN SHEEP. BIGHHORN is the name by which this interesting animal is chiefly known to western people, it being found in greater or less abundance from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. It also occurs in New Mexico, Arizona, and Southern California, but it has not been discovered in any numbers south of the United States. It is more numerous in the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and the Coast Range, but it is by no means confined to the mountains, being also numerous along the Mauvaises Terres or the "Bad Lands" of the White River, the Little Missouri, Yellow stone, and Upper Missouri, in whose desolate and arid wastes it apparently delights. BIOMES KEY Animal List Rocky Mountain Bighorn Ovis canadensis A.Z. General Information The Rocky Mountain bighorns are in the class Mammalia (mammals). Order is Artiodactyla (cloven-hooted mammals). Their family is Bovidae (antelope, cattle, sheep, and goats), and their genus is Ovis (sheep). For protection, the bighorn's own good sense gives it plenty of warning. If it cannot outrun its enemy, then it may turn and charge. The bighorn must watch out for predators such as wolves, bears, coyotes, bobcats, and lynx. It prefers open areas. The bighorn's horns grow from the top of its head, and then curve away around the neck. The bighorn is very heavy and may weigh up to 14 km (30 pounds), and measure 115 cm (45 inches). K i d C r e a t i o n s Bighorn Sheep Bighorn sheep are threatened and on the brink of becoming an endangered animal. Why did this happen? Should we care? For this essay about bighorn sheep, the students in Suzan Clausen's Ecology Club teamed up with resource ecologist Mark Jorgensen. Together, they studied the peninsular bighorn sheep that live in Anza-Borrego State Park, near San Diego, California USA. Bighorn sheep are an animal which many people enjoy watching. There are several varieties of bighorn in the United States: the Desert Bighorn in the West, the Rocky Mountain Bighorn, and Dall Sheep in Alaska. In California there are three subspecies of Bighorn: the Peninsular Bighorn, Nelson's Bighorn, and the California Bighorn. The Peninsular Desert Bighorn Sheep, borrego in Spanish, is Read More
