OLYMPIC HISTORY Jim Thorpe Baseball was first seen at the Games in 1912 and was a demonstration sport a further six times until 1988. Those first Games marked the start of a controversy that was to last until 1983. Jim Thorpe, the native American who won both the decathlon and pentathlon and finished fourth in the high jump and seventh in the long jump at Stockholm, also led the US to victory over Sweden at baseball. Born Wa-Tho-Huck, meaning Bright Path, Thorpe admitted in 1913 that he had received $25 a week playing baseball in his boyhood. The American authorities took a hard line, as did the IOC, and Thorpe was forced to hand back all his medals.
