Early Detection and Treatment of Running Injuries

Votes:0
Early Detection and Treatment of Running Injuries by Warren Finke, Team Oregon By most estimates, 70% of all runners will experience an injury annually that will cause them to take time off from their sport. Fortunately, running does not produce the traumatic kinds of injuries that might be experienced in sports such as sky diving or downhill ski racing. The preponderance of running injuries are, in fact, chronic soft tissue inflammations. The onset of these injuries is not sudden, but usually follows a history of neglect and abuse. Running injuries are caused, they don't "just happen". This class of soft tissue inflammations are often referred to as "overuse" injuries, a term which may be misleading since they are more often a result of changes in training rather than only volume of train Read More

Home HOW TO RUN YOUR FIRST 50-MILER Running and Weight Loss Marathons (and Ultras) Without Walls Secrets of the Wily Old Ultrarunners See also: Art of the Low-Mileage Ultra . From Eric Robinson, a wise young man who runs 2-4 ultras per month. This long ramble aims at helping first-timers finish a 50-mile race, though seasoned ultrarunners may find something worthwhile here as well, since most of what's said has been gleaned from ultrarunners with a lot more miles in their legs than I have. The Prime Directive. Never do anything in a race that you haven't tried first in training. This applies to food, drink, shoes, belt packs, run/walk strategy, and mental attitude. In a 50-mile race, mistakes are amplified - you'll have all day to regret them. Training. You can run 50 miles on as little as Read More

By John Fleetwood A circuit of Glencoe and Glen Etive's hills had long appealed and at last I seemed to have found the line that I was looking for - a true round of high ridges with no out and backs, no contrived peak bagging and including some of the best scrambling in Britain. It had to be done, so despite still feeling somewhat weary after a winter of strenuous outings, I set forth. Leaving Kendal after work at 6.30 on a Friday evening it all seemed a bit of a rush and I was tired. Perhaps thats why I forgot my tor Read More

May 3, 1997 Exercise helps some cancer, heart patients by S. Sternberg G etting over chemotherapy? Hobbled by heart failure? That's no excuse. Haul out those sweats, pull on those sneakers -- and get some exercise. Surprising and callous though it seems, doctors may soon be giving patients such advice. Two new studies, though small in scope, suggest that exercise is as important for people with congestive heart failure and those recovering from chemotherapy as it is for healthy people. Without any firm evidence, doctors have cautioned such patients against vigorous exercise, fearing that physical activity would make matters worse. Most studies probing the safety and usefulness of exercise in people with cancer or congestive heart disease have yielded untrustworthy or inconclusive results. Read More
