ESTABLISHED: President Woodrow Wilson signed the country's 13th national park into existence on August 1st, 1916. In 1980, UNESCO named the park an International Biosphere Reserve because of its outstanding scenic and scientific value. The park was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. LAND AREA: About 377 square miles (230,000 acres), with more than 94 percent of the park designated as wilderness. LOWEST AND HIGHEST ELEVATIONS: Sea level up to 13,677 feet at Mauna Loa's summit.
