When young people start skipping school, they are telling their parents, school officials and the community at large that they are in tr ouble and need our help if they are to keep moving forward in life. Research data tells us that students who become truant and eventually drop out of school put themselves at a long term disadvantage in becoming productive citizens. High school dropouts, for example, are two and a half times more likely to be on welfare than h Read More Go to Site

Now he spends most of his school hours in the lunchroom, playing “spades.” The only class he’s passing, or attending regularly, is geometry, where the teacher “wanted us in class and helps you really want to learn.” A new University of Chicago study shows that high school truancy efforts often miss students like Malik (whose name has been changed) who go to school. Votes:0 VERMONT SCHOOL-TO-WORK BEST PRACTICE TRUANCY INTERVENTION PROJECT Rutland Region Education Alliance Rutland County, Vermont BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PRACTICE Recognizing the correlation between dropouts and truancy, the Truancy Project uses a prevention-intervention model to support youth and families in the region and increase school graduation. The intervention model is a systems approach designed to help schools, parents and youth identify the issues resulting in truancy and create solutions and support systems to change behavior. Working together, a community intervention team and the family address the truant behavior in a way that is supportive, inclusive and consistent. The process begins with a letter sent to the parents/guardians when a youth has five unexcused absences. In the letter Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 TRUANCY COURT KEEPS KIDS IN SCHOOL Raleigh - Some elementary and middle school students who used to skip school frequently are now getting perfect or near-perfect attendance records thanks to Truancy Court, a year-old project in Durham and Mecklenburg counties. The success of the program stems from a judge's ability to delve deeper into the causes of truancy and finding solutions to those problems. That's according to Kentucky Judge Joan Byer who started the Truancy Court Diversion Project in Louisville six years ago. Judge Byer was in Raleigh June 7-8 lecturing prospective judges, school administrators, court counselors, and mental health workers on how to work together to set up a successful truancy court in their counties. Votes:0 Truancy Prevention Through Mediation Program: An Overview Truancy is the first public indication that a child is "at risk" and is an early indicator of juvenile delinquency. The premise of the Truancy Prevention Through Mediation Project (the Project) is that mediation can be an effective means to improve school attendance and to avert juvenile delinquency. Mediation is a process that provides a neutral third party to help parties discuss and resolve issues. The mediation process provides a non-threatening opportunity for school personnel and families to identify and discuss the issues around a child's unexcused absences and to develop mutually acceptable solutions. This Project is unique because it requires families, schools, juvenile courts, and social service agencies to work Read More Go to Site
