Votes:0 AMARYLLIS: YEAR-ROUND CARE A popular indoor plant in the winter and spring is the
amaryllis, with large lily-shaped flowers on tall stems. They are becoming a popular holiday gift. As a bulb, it shares some care and growth methods used with other bulbs. However, because of its background as a tropical plant, and bloom cycle, there are differences.
The bulb is NOT winter hardy in upstate NY, so would not survive planted outdoors, as would tulips, daffodils, etc. The amaryllis is for indoor blooms on a yearly cycle. With proper care, the bulb will
flower again each year. ESTABLISHING THE NEW BULB The bulb does not require pre-cooling to be forced, as do daffodils
and tulips. Newly purchased bulbs should be kept in a cool, dry location
with air circulation until they can be planted. The bulb Read More Go to Site
Votes:0 Growing the Delightful Amaryllis H-811 (Revised) December 2000 Ronald C. Smith, Extension Horticulturist No other interior flower can add such a volume of delightful color in a home during the long North Dakota winters than
the amaryllis. The colors almost challenge the imagination — white, with streaks of red, various shades of red, orange,
and in some cases, yellow. They can be named hybrids
or simply unnamed seedlings, sold by the flower color. With their prominent stamens, they are an amateur plant breeder's delight, so those who want to experiment ala
Gregor Mendel to see what various crosses will yield
color-wise couldn't be working with a better plant. Planting The large amaryllis bulbs are often purchased in potted kit
form with directions included. These potted bulbs require Read More Go to Site

The use of one of the latter conditions is required to promote reflowering of the bulb. Most marketed bulbs sold are greater than 8 inches (20 cm) in circumference, and are either Dutch, Israeli, or South African-grown. They produce 2 to 6 flowers per floral sta Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 Questions on: Amaryllis Ron Smith, Horticulturist, NDSU Extension Service Q: I have propagated some seeds from a flowering amaryllis. Two of the seeds rooted and formed leaves, but have died back. This is their second year and one of them has formed more leaves than last year. I am not sure if and when they will flower, but I am prepared to wait. Is there anything I can do to encourage them? I haven’t changed the compost or the size of the pots because I am not sure if that is the right thing to do. (e-mail reference) A: Let them stay where they are. When warm weather settles in, set them outside on an eastern or northern exposure close to the house. Allow them to dry down this fall. More directions are available at http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/plantsci/landscap/h811w.htm . Q: This la Read More Go to Site
