Simulating Fire Patterns in Heterogeneous Landscapes

Simulating Fire Patterns in Heterogeneous Landscapes Wildfire! ORNL ESD personnel are developing a computer fire simulation, EMBYR , an Ecological Model for Burning the Yellowstone Region, to investigate the causes and consequences of large-scale fires like those that burned in Yellowstone National Park during 1988 . EMBYR is not designed to make predictions about single fire events, but will be used as a ``what-if'' tool to investigate possible landscape-scale effects of variation in fire frequency, fire management, and global climate regimes over time scales ranging from complete fire seasons to millennia. Nevertheless, EMBYR must be calibrated by comparison with single historical events. About the Model EMBYR is a probability-based simulation which represents landscapes as raster maps o Read More

Wildfires Field Trip Intro

* Wildfires Field Trip Trailhead ---- Teacher's Resources ---- Start Field Trip For many years, fire supression was used to controal and eliminate wildland fires. This was thought to be the right thing to do. Over time however, the duff, or underbrush piled up and fuel (the materials that fire feeds on) was allowed to accumulate to the point that were a fire to occur, disaster would almost certainly result. More recently, research (and physical evidence) has shown that allowing naturally occurring fires to burn is one way that nature takes care of housecleaning. Forest resource management now uses a technique called prescribed burns where they perform controlled burning to help that process along. These methods have their supporters and their opponents.
