Changing Nature of Florida's Coastal Geography

Next: Increasing Pressures on Coastal Up: Background Previous: Background Changing Nature of Florida's Coastal Geography Florida has undergone dramatic changes in the last few decades, from a state with low population density and a primarily rural economy to a relatively densely populated state whose economy depends heavily on tourism and services. Some of the most profound transformations have occurred in the coastal zone, creating needs for resource management that reflect the new geographic and demographic realities. Florida's coastal population has seen an increase from 4.8 million in 1960 to 12.8 million in 1990 ( University of Floria Bureau of Economic & Business Research, 1994 ). This rate of growth is four times that of the U.S. in general, and is largely due to immigration from ot Read More

Everglades Florida

Florida Everglades Today's Date Is: The Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands is a rare and beautiful place. It is one of North America's unsung wild places - a beautiful, rugged, subtropical landscape experienced by a relatively few adventurous souls each year. Many who appreciate the unique qualities of this wilderness will argue that it is a place better kept secret. Perhaps, in my quest for solitude and a deeply personal communion with nature, I might ordinarily agree. But I also feel that it is a resource important not only for its natural heritage and spiritually enriching powers, but for its commercial and recreational values as well. Geography - Merriam-Webster's Atlas

--> Florida The first flag of Florida was hoisted on June 25, 1845, at the inauguration of its first governor, William D. Moseley. It had five horizontal stripes (blue, orange, red, white, and green) and a ribbon with the inscription "Let us alone." The U.S. flag served as a canton. The states' rights and antifederalist symbolism in the design is clear, but the associations of the colors are unknown; in any event the flag seems not to have been extensively used. The next state flag was established on January 13, 1861, following the secession of Florida from the Union. The design, prescribed by the commander of the state's armed forces, was similar in many respects to the Stars and Stripes; it consisted of 13 red and white horizontal stripes and a white star on a blue canton. The next flag, Read More
