LECTURE EXTENSION Upright Locomotion and Affective Reorganization in the Infant-Mother Dyad (p. 189) Recent investigation has examined the relationship between infants' motor development and various aspects of their social and emotional capacities. For instance, Biringen, et al. (1995) studied the role of upright locomotion in the development of infant-caregiver interactions. The study consisted of naturalistic home observations in which both positive and conflictual aspects of the mother-infant dyad were recorded. The sample was divided into two groups based on the timing of the transition to walking: early walkers and prewalkers. Each early walker was matched by age with another infant who had not yet begun to walk (a prewalker). The results demonstrated that early walkers exhibited more Read More

To raise awareness of Shaken Baby Syndrome, BIAN has collaborated on a joint project with a local agent from USC, a major supplier of children's Registered Educational Savings Plans, to produce and distribute 1,500 baby bibs annually. The Shaken Baby Syndrome bib will be distributed, along with language appropriate literature, to every new mother who has given birth in North Bay through inclusion in the Welcome Wagon package or who has self-identified as a new mother. SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME You have seen it on ABC NEWS 20/20. You have read many of the horrible stories about it in your local newspapers. Shaken Baby Syndrome is all too real... Shaken baby syndrome is caused when a baby is forcefully shaken in an attempt to quiet him. A baby does not have the muscle control needed to support its heavy head when being shaken. This action can bruise the brain causing severe brain damage. It can also cause the spinal cord to snap resulting paralysis or death. Injury can also occur when the caregiver is too rough when playing with the baby. It is never a good idea to toss a baby in the air in order to get a smile or giggle from the baby. FACTS ABOUT SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME: The main reason a baby is shaken is in an attempt to quiet inconsolable crying. Almost 80% o Read More

Shaken Baby Syndrome by Raye Neely Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service Baton Rouge, LA E ach year thousands of young children suffer brain injury or die from being violently shaken. Children as old as five years are vulnerable to Shaken-Baby Syndrome (SBS), but infants between two and four months are especially at risk. Children under one account for one-third of reported physical abuse cases, with head trauma the most frequent cause of disability or death. Public education is needed to prevent Shaken-Baby Syndrome. Approximately one shaken baby in four dies from injuries. Those who survive may suffer blindness caused by bleeding around the brain and eyes, disabling brain damage, including mental retardation or seizure disorder, and speech and learning disabilities. Shaken baby syndrome describes a pattern of neurologic injuries caused by violent shaking of an infant. An infant's head is proportionately large in comparison to the infant's body, and the neck musculature is not well-developed, so shaking will cause the head to flop back and forth, producing extensive intracranial (often subdural) and retinal hemorrhages and can be fatal. WHAT IS SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME? Shaken Baby Syndrome is a term used to describe the constellation of signs and symptoms resulting from violent shaking or shaking and impacting of the head of an infant or small child. The degree of brain damage depends on the amount and duration of the shaking and the forces involved in impact of the head. Signs and symptoms range on a spectrum of neurological alterations from minor (irritability, lethargy, tremors, vomiting) to major (seizures, coma, stupor, death). These neurological changes are due to destruction of brain cells secondary to trauma, lack of oxygen to the brain cells, and swelling of the brain. Extensive retinal hemorrhages in one or both eyes are found in the vast majority of these cases. The classic triad of subdural hematoma, brain swelli Read More

The mechanism of these injuries was believed to be violent shaking of the child's shoulders so that the head whipped back and forth with enough force to cause tearing of blood vessels between the brain and its covering (dura mater); subsequent bleeding in the space between the dura and the brain causes increased pressure within the skull, which in turn caused bleeding from the tiny blood vessels t Read More

NEVER SHAKE A BABY! Shaken Baby Syndrome Babies or small children who suffer injury of death from severe shaking or jerking are victims of what is called Shaken Baby Syndrome . Sometimes a young child's crying or need for attention can be more than tired parents or caregivers can cope with. In frustration, without knowing the dangers, they may shake a baby or small child to get its attention or to make it stop crying. Children under two can easily be injured from shaking because their weak neck muscles aren't yet strong enough to fully control their head movements. When a child is shaken, the head whips back and forth, slamming the fragile brain tissue against the hard skull, causing bruising, bleeding and swelling inside the brain. When the shaking is combined with throwing the baby again Read More

Shaken Baby Syndrome Fact Sheet

The combination of a crying baby and a frustrated parent or caregiver CAN BE DEADLY. Why do babies CRY? Crying is the only way babies have to tell us that they need something. They might need to eat, to have their diaper changed or to be held. The baby could be too hot or too cold or in pain. Sometimes babies cry because they need to release some tension of their own. Crying is normal. The amount of time a baby spends crying varies with age, health and temperament. Why do parents and caregivers become FRUSTRATED and ANGRY? Crying is an annoying sound. It is supposed to be. If it was a pleasant sound, crying would be easy to ignore and the baby's needs would never be met. Unfortunately, parents and caregivers are not always able to stop the crying. When a baby cries a lot and is not easily Read More

WHEN PARENTS LOSE THEIR COOL: THE SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME

Votes:0
WHEN PARENTS LOSE THEIR COOL: THE SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME by Dr. Moshe Ipp Physical abuse is the leading cause of serious head injury in infants. When a child younger than one year of age has an intra-cranial injury, it should be presumed to have been due to child abuse. It has been estimated that when uncomplicated skull fractures are excluded, 95% of serious intracranial injuries and 64% of all head injuries in infants under 1 year of age are due to child abuse. The Shaken Baby Syndrome was first described in 1972 by a radiologist John Cassey. It occurs most often in infants younger than 6 months of age and is frequently overlooked in its most subtle form since there is often an absence of external visible injuries. What are the clinical features of the Shaken Baby Syndrome? The classic cli Read More
