Stalin Online College and University Degree Guide History Learning Site > Modern World History > Russia 1917 to 1939 > Stalin Joseph Stalin gained the effective leadership of Russia in 1929. Stalin's time as leader of Russia was to gain fame for three reasons: 1. The Five Year Plans 2. Collectivisation 3. The Purges But what do we know about Stalin? ? he was born in 1879 ? he came from a poor background; his father was a cobbler and his mother was a peasant ? his real surname was Djugasvili ? he did well at school and won a scholarship to go to a seminary where priests were trained ? it was at this seminary that Stalin turned to Marxism ? he became a follower of Lenin and went to secret meetings and distributed leaflets ? between 1902 and 1913 he was arrested 8 times and exiled to Siberia. History & Culture of Russia / Overview

History of Russia W ith the dissolution of the Soviet Union there has been an enormous resurgence of interest in Russia's pre-Soviet past, as well as a great deal of debate and reconsideration of the Soviet era itself. This shift has not resulted in a simple vilification of everything Soviet or a naive embrace of all that preceded it, but it has spurred an unprecedented effort to regain the ancient Russian national heritage. Churches are being restored all across the country, great Russian writers and artists whose works were banned are once again being honored, and the individual character of ancient cities and communities is once again becoming established. Next year, the city of Moscow is celebrating its 850th Anniversary, a celebration that will mark the recovery, as well as the commem Read More

Greek traders conducted extensive commerce with Scythian tribes around the shores of the Black Sea and the Crimean region. By the ninth century, Eastern Slavs began to settle in what is now Ukraine, Belarus, and the Novgorod and Smolensk regions. In 862, the political entity known as Kievan Rus was established Read More

Russian Orthodox church: early history

Russian Orthodox church: early history and art Russian Orthodox church is largest autocephalous, or ecclesiastically independent, Eastern Orthodox church in the world. Its membership is estimated at between 40 and 80 million. Internet resources on Christianity are available from the Russian Christian Home Page ( English and Russian versions), courtesy of Oleg Voskresensky (vosole@bethel.edu) Removal of the empire's capital from Rome to Constantinople, the "second Rome," in 330 greatly strengthened the temporal power of the bishop of Rome. In the Byzantine Empire the patriarch of Constantinople remained under the political control of the Christian emperor. Cultural, political, philosophical, and theological differences strained relations between the two cities. Rome demanded Latin as the on Read More

Soviet Archives: Entrance Room

Soviet Archives: Entrance Room Soviet Archives Exhibit Welcome to the Library of Congress's Soviet Archives exhibit. How to use the exhibit This exhibit is divided into many small displays divided on two floors. You can visit them in any order, or follow the footsteps for a guided tour. The guided tour will bring you back to this entrance room. Almost every display contains images of documents from the Soviet Archives. These images are too small to be readable, but when you click on them, you will get the full size originals (each are 100-400 Kb apiece; do expect some color changes). Hanging next to most displays is a translation on some scrolls, indicated by a small icon: It should be noted that the images often show only fragments of the document, so don't be confused if the translation Read More
