Autograph Letter of Franz Joseph to the Kaiser, Vienna, 2 July 1914 From Emperor Franz Joseph, Vienna, delivered to the Kaiser in Berlin on 5 July 1914 by the Austro-Hungarian Ambassador, Count de Szogyeny-Marich. The annexe-memoire was drafted fully a month before Sarajevo. I sincerely regret that You should have been obliged to give up Your intention of going to Vienna for the funeral ceremonies. I should have liked personally to express to You my sincerest thanks for Your sympathy in my keen sorrow -- a sympathy which has greatly touched me. By Your warm and sympathetic condolence You have given me renewed proof that I have in You a sincere friend worthy of confidence and that I may count upon You in every hour of grave trial. I should have liked very much to discuss with You the genera Read More

Romania disappeared from recorded history for hundreds of years, to reemerge in the medieval period as the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. Heavily taxed and badly administered under the Ottoman empire, the two Principalities were unified under a single native prince in 1859, and had their full independence ratif Read More

E UROPEAN R OYAL H OUSES "PRINCE PAUL OF ROMANIA" Another such claimant is Paul Hohenzollern (ex-Lambrino), self-styled H.R.H. Prince Paul of Romania. This claimant is the son of Mircea (Carol) Lambrino, the son of the late King Carol II of Romania by Iona Lambrino. The couple celebrated an Orthodox religious marriage which was probably valid according to Orthodox Canon Law but which did not have the prior permission of the reigning King. The marriage was legally annulled by the Romanian Parliament and their son Mircea born after the annulment. The later took action in the Portuguese (King Carol II died in Portugal) and French courts after his father's death in an attempt to establish his right to the royal styles and titles, but succeeded only in obtaining recognition of the nam Read More
