"History of German Settlements in Southern Hungary" by Sue Clarkson

History of German Settlements in Southern Hungary by Sue Clarkson &#169 copyright 1995, 1996 by Sue Clarkson and FEEFHS; all rights reserved Latest Update: 18 August 1996 At the end of the nineteenth century, there were more than two million Germans living in Hungary. During the eighteenth century, the Habsburg monarchy of Austria, which ruled Hungary at that time, had enticed Germans to emigrate to the unsettled lands of Southern Hungary, which had been devastated by over 150 years of Turkish occupation. From 1711 to 1750, approximately 800 villages were founded in Hungary by German settlers. The Banat Province was one of the primary areas of settlement. The Habsburgs had become the ruling monarchy in Hungary in 1527, following the death of King Louis II of Hungary. King Louis was killed Read More

Aquincum

Aquincum 3 kilometres (1.8 m.) to the north of FlÓriÁn tÉr, in the centre of Óbuda, can be seen the excavated ruins of this former Roman town . The excavations are along Szentendrei Út, near the station of the suburban express railway which starts at BathyÁny tÉr. The town was founded in the first century A.D. by the Roman legions which had occupied the region they called Pannonia , and which is today's Transdanubia. The military settlement was situated on the site of today's Óbuda, to the south of ÁrpÁd Bridge. Aquincum was a civilian town surrounded by walls, with aqueducts, sewers and paved streets. Artisans, tradesmen and vine-growers lived here, but in the fourth century the repeated attacks of the Barbarians forced the population to leave the city. Brief History of Hungary

Brief History of Hungary By way of introduction To encapsulate the history of eleven-hundred years in some 100 Kbytes of text the author had to be selective - much detail of interest had to be ommitted in order to present the broad outline. Selection, as well as the linking and glossing of the selected facts, inevitably shows up as an editorial view , which might have been subtly different had this text been prepared by someone else -- but few would question, it is to be hoped, the overall factual accuracy of the narrative. A comment on presentation : reading about history in reverse sequence might be more satisfactory than the orthodox approach beloved of schoolmasters, namely starting with the distant past and moving forward through time, which risks boring the reader with details whose Read More

Craftsmen and shopkeepers in Hungary in 1891, according to the national census In the second half of 1998 I started entering data of craftsmen and shopkeepers in Hungary in 1891. The source of data is a book, total of some 2000 pages, published in the 1890s. The book is based on the national census, accomplished in 1891, covering every settlement of the old Hungarian Kingdom. This means that data for territories that went to successor states in 1920: parts of Austria, known as Burgenland today's Slovakia Sub-Carpathia the western part of today's Read More

Home > Christianity > Early Christianity in Aquincum (?buda) Early Christianity in Aquincum (?buda) From AD 200 The western, Transdanubian region of old Hungary was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC and became the province named Pannonia of the Roman Empire?Imperium Romanum. This border province defended the empire from the northeast. View of Buda built on the site of Aquincum. The Romans established the town of Aquincum on the western bank of the Danube River, which was the eastern frontier of Pannonia and the Roman Empire at the same time. The western side of Budapest, Buda, stands on the site of Aquincum. In AD 106 Pannonia was divided into two regions and Aquincum became the capital of Pannonia Inferior. Although Hungary was a monarchy for nearly 1,000 years, its constitutional system preceded by several centuries the establishment of Western-style governments in other European countries. Following the defeat of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy (1867-1918) at the end of World War I, Hungary lost two-thirds of its territory and nearly as much of its population. It experienced a brief but bloody communist dictatorship and counterrevolution in 1919, followed by a 25-year regency under Adm. Miklos Horthy. Although Hungary fought in Read More

Important dates of Hungarian history 5th century The Hungarian tribes left the area of the Urals. They passed along the Volga and the Caspian Sea. After several hundred years of wandering, they reached the Carpathian Basin. 896 Under the leadership of ÁrpÁd, the Hungarian tribes settled in the Carpathian Basin. They drove out part of the residents and absorbed the other part. 997-1038 King Stephen of the ÁrpÁd dynasty ruled the country. 1000 Stephen was converted to Christianity. After his death, he was canonized. 1055 An abbey was set up at Tihany. The foundation charter was drawn up on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. HUNGARY - Introduction

Votes:0
HUNGARY - Introduction Do extra-terrestrial beings exist? - the Nobel Prize winning Italian physicist, Enrico Fermi, was once asked by his disciples in California. Of course, Fermi answered - they are already here among us, they are called Hungarians... You are welcome here, in the homeland of the extra-terrestrial beings. Why did Fermi think this about us? Because Hollywood's dream factories were partly built by Hungarian producers, directors, writers and cameramen? Or because - as the saying goes - Hungarians were created by God to sit on horseback? Perhaps because Bela Bartok's music in his own time was considered extra-terrestrial by many? Or because of the Hungarian language, which does not resemble any world language and sounds so strange? So, who are these Hungarians? It is not (yet Read More

Nationalism in Hungary, 1848-1867

Twenty-Five Lectures on Modern Balkan History Lecture 7: Nationalism in Hungary, 1848-1867 Previous lecture / Complete list of lectures / Next lecture This lecture and the next look at two more Balkan revolutions: the Revolutions of 1848 in Hungary and Romania. The 1848 Revolutions "failed" in the short run but if we trace events through the following two decades, we find evidence of eventual success. At the same time, the limits of that success shed light on contradictory themes behind the events of 1848 themselves. If the Serb and Greek Revolutions were wars of independence, the Revolutions of 1848 were driven far more by matters of internal domestic policy. In Western Europe, "1848" revolved around issues like national unification, civil liberties and economic privilege but as the revol Read More

FIRST NAME LAST NAME Old Homes of New Americans Table of Contents As part of our efforts to present different perspectives on the life of your ancestors and the time they lived in we present Old Homes of New Americans, published in 1913. The book attempts to explain to America exactly who are all these people called Austro-Hungarians and where are they coming from? The book is written in a third party perspective, not from the point of view of a person explaining who he is. In it you will find misinformation and stereotypes that were typical of the time it was written with a little religious bias added in places. We do not endorse all statements made in the book but offer it as a source of better understanding of the time in which it was written. Old Homes of New Americans The Country and Read More

James Theron Wilson Sinespe libertatis: Slavery in Hungary under the House of ÁrpÁd * I. Introduction Most histories of Hungary, like those of other states, give scant attention to the existence of slavery during the Middle Ages. The position of serfdom in "feudal society" is often discussed. Even the lives of those taken as slaves to the Ottoman Empire is a common topic. But for discussions of chattel slavery among the Hungarians, one must look to more specialized literature. Nonetheless, the existence of discussions of slavery is particularly missed in descriptions of Hungarian society under the House of ÁrpÁd, as this period is a uniquely important component of Hungarian self-image. Indeed, slavery was a major factor in the Hungarian economy for several centuries, later than in most sta Read More
