Anaheim Landslide Disaster next to Disneyland & the Anaheim Angels -- Features that may Indicate Catastrophic Landslide Movement

Features that may Indicate Catastrophic Landslide Movement Before (Photo by J. Kostelecky, 1987) After (Photo by D.P. Schwert, North Dakota State University, 1988) "Landslides have a maximum speed of about 17 miles per hour," stated the lead geologist for the City of Anaheim, Mark McLarty with Eberhart and Stone, Inc., to a group of landslide victims -- as if we all could somehow easily drive away from our impending doom at 60 miles per hour. But what if the unsuspecting homeowner doesn't sleep in his car, with his family at his side? What to do and look for during and immediately after heavy rains Areas that are generally prone to landslide hazards: On existing old landslides. On or at the base of slopes. In or at the base of minor drainage hollows. At the base or top of an old fill slope Read More

Interior Watershed Assessment Procedure Guidebook - Appendix 5

[ Interior Watershed Assessment Procedure Guidebook Table of Contents ] Appendix 5. Definition of unstable slopes and those with a potential for mass wasting The potential for slopes to experience landsliding is determined by terrain (surficial geology) mapping, and the subsequent interpretation of the terrain mapping information into slope stability classes using, as defining criteria, slope angle, materials and landforms, material texture, active geomorphological processes, and soil drainage. Terrain maps provide information about the distribution and characteristics of surficial materials, landforms, and geological processes in an area. The terrain classification system used for mapping in British Columbia is defined in Howes and Kenk (1988). The Resources Inventory Committee (1994) pro Read More

Landslides in BC

Landslides in BC The Hope slide, 18 kilometres east of Hope, was one of the largest slides in Canadian history. The southwestern slope of Johnson Peak, collapsed on January 9, 1965, spreading 47 million cubic metres of debris, 85 metres thick, over a 3 kilometre stretch of the Hope-Princeton highway. The slide occurred in an unpopulated area in early morning hours and resulted in four deaths (photo courtesy of the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks). What do we mean by the word "landslide"? Landslide is a general term used to describe the down-slope movement of soil, rock and organic materials under the influence of gravity. It also describes the landform that results. British Columbia's steep, mountainous terrain, its complex geology, its high precipitation, both as rain a Read More
