Data may be derived from traditional methods of field mapping, from various types of aerial and space remote sensing, as well as from existing maps and data bases. GAGE commenced its official activity at the INQUA Congress in Berlin, Germany (Aug. '95) and continued through the INQUA Congress in Reno, Nevada USA (July 2003). At the time of the INQUA Congress in 2003, GAGE completed its term of activity and ceased to exist officially. However, some projects may continue within other Read More

GLACIOLOGY

WELCOME TO THE HOME OF DEEP GLACIOLOGY Glaciology is the study of ice in all of its manifestations and the study of all natural phenomena where ice is involved, including processes at or near the base of glaciers and ice sheets on Earth and other planets. Barclay Kamb and Hermann Engelhardt are the principal investigators of the Caltech Glaciology Group supported primarily by the National Science Foundation. We also cooperate with scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA. Our work connects us with the glaciology community world-wide. ICE in all of its forms is our field of study and of great interest to us. Results from our most recent field season 2000-2001 that led us to KAMB ICE STREAM , West Antarctica. Results from SIPLE DOME , Antarctica. Results from BINDSCHADLER ICE STR Read More

ICE

Votes:0
ICE Ice, the frozen form of liquid water, is abundant on the earth's surface, in the planetary system, and in interstellar space. If all the ice presently existing on earth melted, sea level would rise about 70 m. In some planets and in most moons, ice is the major constituent. Pluto is 80% ice; Jupiter's moons Ganymede and Callisto and Saturn's Titan contain 40% ice. Ice is also present in many other moons, in the planetary ring systems, and in comets. The mass of ice stored in the terrestrial polar ice sheets and in alpine glaciers is closely related to the climate. All of the natural ice on earth is hexagonal ice, ice Ih, as manifested in six-cornered snow flakes (see Fig. 1) . At lower temperatures and at pressures above 2 kbar many other ice phases with different crystalline structure Read More

Ice Ages-- Illinois State Museum

Ice Ages ISM Home > Exhibits > Ice Ages Ice Ages When most people hear the words Ice Age , they think of glaciers covering much of North America and Eurasia, animals like mammoths and saber-toothed cats, and Cro-Magnon people painting cave walls. These things come to mind because the words "Ice Age" often refer to the last time that glaciers extended over a large portion of the Earth's surface. The ISM online exhibit The Midwestern U.S. 16,000 Years Ago provides more information on this glaciation in the Midwestern United States. The amount of ice on the Earth's surface has varied greatly through time. For example, the extent of ice in North America has changed dramatically since the height of the last glacial advance 20,000 years ago. During most of the last 1 billion years the earth had Read More

Almost 10 percent of the world's land mass is currently covered with glaciers, mostly in places like Greenland and Antarctica. Glaciers are important features in the hydrologic cycle and affect the volume, variability, and water quality of runoff in areas where they occur. In Read More
