Votes:0 The Internet TESL Journal Cultural Kickboxing in the ESL Classroom: Encouraging
Active Participation Jan Guidry Lacina mjlacina [at] sfaadm.sfasu.edu Stephen F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches, TX, USA) Kickboxing has become a popular sport in the United States. The
goal of the sport is to achieve an aerobic workout while attempting to
stay in groove with the rest of the aerobic group; it is merely a new form
of extreme high impact aerobics. English teachers often participate
in a form of cultural kickboxing when teaching Korean and Japanese students.
This sport, at the academic level, occurs in the classroom since both groups
sometimes compete against each other, and there is often a cultural conflict
between the two groups and the English as a second language (ESL) American

Votes:0 Myths about Bilingualism Further information about
all of these myths can be found in the books listed on the Books and Newsletters page. "Learning two languages confuses a child and lowers his
intelligence." Old, poorly designed studies done primarily in the United States
claimed to show that bilinguals had lower intelligence than
monolinguals. Newer research has revealed several flaws in the
studies. The most obvious flaw is that the bilingual children were
recent immigrants, with poorer knowledge of English and more stressful
life situations than their monolingual counterparts. Newer studies
with more careful controls have shown that bilinguals are better at
some specific tasks, such as language games, but that otherwise the
differences between bilinguals and monolinguals are negligible Read More Go to Site

Opponents call it expensive and potentially isolating for students. After a background report by Betty Ann Bowser, Margaret Warner hears from both sides . However, it is not as difficult as it is often made out to be, and many of the problems students have with it are the result of the inadequate explanations usually given in TEFL books. Votes:0 Definitions Relating to Bilingualism bilingualism There are many definitions of bilingualism, some of them
incorrect and based on myth. A person does not, for example, have to
speak both languages with equal fluency to be a bilingual. It is very
common for bilinguals, even those who have been bilingual since birth,
to be somewhat "dominant" in one language. I (Cindy) define
bilingualism simply as using two languages on a regular basis. There
are other valid definitions of bilingualism, of course; those who are
interested in learning more are invited to skip ahead to the Books and Newsletters page
and start reading some of the references mentioned there. bilingual family Quite simply, a family in which most of the members are
