Votes:0 Paper Marbling Ideas From Mike Moore These ideas on Paper Modeling were shared by Mike Moore, Kindergarten Teacher, at the California Kindergarten Association Conference in San Francisco, 1997. Mike offered a one hour workshop where the teachers were able to experience paper marbling first hand. Mike suggested to use the marbled paper in the following ways: During spring, use several quarter sheets of paper; cream, light blue, and turquoise with one hot color. He told us that after the kindergartners marble the paper and let it dry, he has them make three fish and strings them to hang in front of a window covered with blue cellophane. This becomes their "school" of marble fish! For Valentines day they make several sheets of pink, cream, lavender and light blue paper. He asks the students t Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 written by Ouyang Changpei article selected from Travel China weekly About 1,800 years ago, during the Eastern Han Dynasty(25-220), Cai Lun improved China's papermaking technique using bark and hemp. This then became one of the four great ancient inventions of China. Today, ancient papermaking has been replaced by modern means of production, but in some places in southwestern China's Guizhou Province, where many people of ethnic-minority groups live, this ancient technique is still practiced. In Huishui, Changshun and Danzhai near Guiyang, capital of Guizhou, many papermaking workshops are well-preserved. Of them, the biggest is the one in Dongkou Village, Lushan Town, Huishui County, some 80 kilometers south of Guiyang. Votes:0 Welcome to the wonderful world of color, pattern, line Welcome to the world of Hello! My name is Evi Parissi and I live in Piraeus Greece. This is my personal home page which is dedicated to the ancient art of marbling. Since I was a child I have been enchanted by color. Color possesses almost magical qualities for me and sometimes simply mixing watercolor paints and applying them to paper is enough to calm and relax me. Marbling is an art, the success of which is very much dependent on the use of color. I first became acquainted with a very simple kind of marbling at a craft fair in Oxford and fell instantly in love with it. This love at first sight lasted long enough to end up in marriage when I finally learnt more about this fascinating art and managed to produce my own marbled papers. Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 The Art of Papermaking Many people find it remarkable that maps have survived for over three or four hundred years. Most early maps were printed on strong, thick, paper handmade in France, Germany, Switzerland, and, after 1610, England; the finest paper came from northern Italy. The size of paper on which maps were printed was determined by the size of the printing press. Large maps were made by individually printing the sheets and then gluing them together. Paper was first made in Asia about two thousand years ago, and the art of papermaking evolved gradually. More than a thousand years passed before it was introduced into Europe during the thirteenth century. There, paper was produced almost entirely from linen and cotton rags pulped in water. Papermaking required a long and often expens Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 C'EST LE LIVRE Next time you pick up a book think "bark." Book, in French le livre and in Spanish el libro , is liber in Latin and the origin of the word library, but liber in Latin also is a word for bark. A book, therefore, is "on bark." In olden Europe, this was a correct statement, because paper was made from fibers in the bark of special dicotyledonous plants. The comparison with plants continues, because pages in a book are often referred to as leaves--in German, leaf is das Blatt --and we also leaf through books! Floppy diskettes notwithstanding, our world could not communicate effectively without paper, and our FAX machines would be useless if not constantly supplied. Besides, without paper there would be no BIO 10 full-sentence outlines, no manuals, and no multiple-choice examinat Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 history | decorative papers | workshop | resources | home Wednesday, September 1 Welcome Suminagashi is the ancient Japanese technique of decorating paper with inks. It is believed to be the oldest form of marbling, originating in China over 2,000 years ago and practiced in Japan by Shinto priests as early as the 12th century. Suminagashi (sue-me-NAH-gah-she) , which means literally "ink-floating" involves doing just that. Japanese Sumi-e inks were originally used, dropped carefully to float on a still water surface and then blown across to form delicate swirls, after which the ink was picked up by laying a sheet of white rice paper atop the ink covered water. The practice of Suminagashi remains much the same today, although now artists also use acrylic paints that flow and spread over a l Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 Will Hand Papermaking Survive? A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THIS LONG-LIVED TRADITION by Michael Durgin Outside the Dieu DonnÉ Papermill in New York, N.Y. D espite the many new technologies and sophisticated processes that have given us the volume of paper we have today, there are some American mills where paper is still made much as it was 2,000 years ago in China -- one sheet at a time, by experienced craftspeople. Following a slow and laborious process, they are preserving the old ways. And their efforts have found a place in the market, as the public has also experienced a renewed interest in the craft. Paper originated in China and gradually spread both eastward to Japan, where it became highly refined, and westward to the Middle East and North Africa. It reached Europe in the Middle A Read More Go to Site
